Exhaust sound is driving me nuts.

Ok guys the exhaust in my truck is driving me nuts. Its 2 months old 4k miles. Between 40-60mph I swear it sounds like drone. Its what I call loud in the truck. Today I stopped and looked a new Z71 because my old Tahoe I traded in had a quiet stock exhaust. Well so did the new Z71 so much quieter. The only problem was I hated everything else about it or I may have been getting rid of the tundra today.

Does anyone else notice this sound? Its a 2012 5.7 CM as I recall the other Tundra I test drove was overly loud in the exhaust department also. Does anyone know of a way to quite this thing down? Its driving me nuts.

Maybe I am not very observant, but I haven't noticed any drone with the stock exhaust.

This is the like 10th truck ive ever had and its by far the quietest, in fact too quiet.. I drive a ford f350 v10, a 2011 chevy z71 silverado, and a 2006 chevy 6.0 v8 box truck at work all day and all three of them are waaaayyyy louder then my tundra, all are stock exhaust. SO maybe somethings wrong with yours or my 08 is way quieter, lol! The 2011 chevy i drive is a 5.3v8 z71 silverado and its loud stock so im confused why your test drive was quieter?

I drove a 5.3 v8 z71 today and when it was sitting at idle it was almost silent. When running down the road you could barley hear it. The problem was the interior was awful and it rode like a bread truck. This is from a previously only chevy owner. My tahow was a 5.3 also and it was same way quiet unless I was standing on it.

Last night drove my buddies 5.3 silverado its an 07 I think same thing couldn't hear it on the way back from lake pulling boat for 75 miles. I am not making this up. The Tundra is louder sitting at a stop and drive you nuts till you get it up over 65mph on the road.

Do a turndown after the muffler, that'll clear the drone on quieter exhaust. With my exhaust I run it's loud enough when I get drone it vibrates the dash a little bit.

has the noise changed over the short time you have owned it?

pre 2012 the trucks were overly quiet, like a big ass prius going down the road, hence why so many of us do exhaust mods cuz it is toooooo quiet...

if they got rid of the after muffler resonator that may have to do with it.

The reason I asked if the sound level has changed is because one time when I was on vacation I filled up with fuel up north and within 10 miles my truck was loud as hell, I loved it, it was night and day difference... after that tank was ran out it was back to normal tho.

Its been this loud since I bought it. didn't notice at fist since it was 100+ outside when I bought it AC going full blast covers a lot of noise. My truck is a tss and has a chrome tip from factory I pulled it off tonight and its heavy and double walled. I am thinking after driving it some this may have helped quiet it down. Storms and wind tonight so hard to say for sure.

I no longer have the stock exhaust, but even with TRD exhaust and intake, my truck is very quiet when idling. It wakes up only when I mesh the pedal.
. . . and I am not young hot rod type.

Perhaps there is something wrong with your truck. Take it to the dealer and have it checked out.

There seems to be a dis-connect between the exhaust note outside the truck and the drone heard inside.Mine has been annoying since new. I stood road side while a friend drove the truck by me several times;the exhaust note from the tail pipe was, as described, quite, however the drone inside at between 40 and 60 MPH is truely annoying. I've become accustomed to it, but at times it is still annoying and I have no desire to cut off a perfectly good tail pipe and dump highly corrosive exhaust gasses under the truck body:(

what JC said, turndowns won't cause you any problems at all. You don't have to do a straight turndown you can have them angled as well.

My 12 5.7 CM has the drone. I have 5K on it now. One thing I did notice was last week I filled up with 93 octane when I was going to take the camper home to see if it helped. To my surprise, it did not sound like a diesel anymore when at idle, and it did quiet the drone down a good bit, even when not towing.

Should a higher octane gas quiet the lifters in the 5.7 that much, even when there is no load on the truck?

Now that I have run out the 93, and started putting 87 back in it, the drone, and lifters are getting loud again.

Octane shoudln't affect the lifters at all. Only engine ping in the cumbustion chamber. I now have over 4k on my truck. I have also noticed the engine seems a little louder from the valve train. I wonder if its this light weight oil? have you had your 5k service yet? Lots of guys talk about going from 0-20 to 0-30 and the engine quieting down.

I thought my 2012 was pretty quiet. I added a ba muffler and it drones around 2k rpm pretty loudly. Other rpm lower are very quiet and other Rpm higher have less drone. If the resonator on prior years is after the muffler I don't think my 2012 has one.

No, I am going for my 5K this week. The dealer was trying to talk me into waiting for 10K, but since I tow my camper, I don't want to wait that long. They said ok, but they are going to cover only 2 oil changes regardless of when I bring it in.

Yes, I have seen where a slightly heavier oil with quiet it down. Was it 0-30 or going 5-20?

Either way, there are times at a drive through it almost sounds like a diesel running. Drives me nuts at times, but still not near as bad as the Hemi tick lol.

Is your truck a flex fuel? Did you get the toyota care book that says when you should have changes? Here is page in my book stating every 5k at toyotas expense. Don't let them short change you. http://www.tundratalk.net/forums/tu...undra-general-discussion/111170-2012-5-7ff-uses-0-20w-synthetic-5k-changes.html

Funny you said the thing about the diesel sound I have been thinking my engine may be getting louder lately. I just filled up a couple days ago but may try a higher octane on next fill up. I was also asking about oil because I was wondering is this stuff breaking down to quick. I will be doing a OA when I get mine changed in the next month.
