Water stains on the roof

I had my tundra for a month now. Finally I washed it on my own. Until now I had it washed at a car wash.

When I was drying the car, I noticed that the roof has some severe water stains. I guess either the dealer or the car wash guys didn't dry the roof and it just sat in the sun.

What can I use to get rid of this? Something I can do by hand. I already tried clay bar and it seems to work a little but still the a lot of the stains remains.

I do have a dual action polisher and I know I can get some compound I can use with the polisher but I prefer not to. It's because I am out of pads and compound. Buying all those things can get costly.

The DA polisher should remove them. Start with medium compound polish and a medium cutting pad. Move to something more aggressive if needed. Remember if you go to a heavy cut and it works you then have to polish in reverse (heavy, med, fine) to remove the scratches. Then wax. I have seen hard water spots that cant be removed with a DA. If thats the case check with a respectable detailer or just dont worry. The average person will never see your roof.

yea, unless its low sittin, no ones ever gonna see the roof...

i have hand waxed mine before when i had water stains, it worked, and then i figured that with all the time and reaching it took, how much is someone gonna be able to see it.

But someone standing on the second floor can see the roof of my truck and say something because of the water stains. LOL.

Seriously though, I am gonna try to get it out with my DA polisher and if it fails then I'm just gonna leave it. No sense in spending a lot of $$$ on a part of the truck that no one can see.

chances are a cleaner wax may even do it man...

Clay only removed surface fall out, polish removes marks.

Here's what I plan on doing this weekend.

1. Clay bar the roof.
2. Using the DA polisher with meguier's ultimate compound, go over the roof.
3. Meguier's wax.

If this step doesn't do it then I will just leave it.

If you lived near me and the sun would come out. I would invite you over and help. I have the Porter Cable 7424xp and the Flex DA polisher and a mountain of pads and polishes. (I detail cars on the side). Make sure you drink a beer after, it always looks much better. Good luck.

The water spots might not have been from the dealership. This is possible, but you could have caused them too. Realize... with how big these trucks are and how much time it takes to go over the while thing it's quite possible that once you rinse it off certain panels could already be air drying and forming water spots while you are in the process of hand drying other panels.

This happened to me a few times. Had to learn the 'wash a panel/dry a panel' technique. Drying it with blown hot air might also help. Unlike sedans or smaller trucks, with something this big you need to attack it with a plan.

I didn't read all the posts but if you don't want to go all in and get a Porter Cable DA, all the different pads and compounds that are required when you get into detailing,

You can get a 29 dollar orbital from AutoZone or harbor freight and get some polish and take it out pretty easy.

Most retail places don't carry full lines of the correct compounds, pads and polishes but they usually have some mequiars stuff that will take them out. Shouldn't take too long.

Those "DA's" that you get for a few dollars are "waxers" not polishers. They don't have have enough OPM's (oscilations per minute). They are only good for applying and removing wax. Avoid buying a rotary polisher. Without the proper experience in use and pad/polish selection you can destroy paint.

Gotta disagree with you there. They will remove scratches when used with the correct bonnet and compound.

You aren't gonna destroy paint with any DA.

A Rotary yes but not a DA.

I already have the da polisher. I have the meguiar's one. I think its the same as the porter cable one. It did a great job on my previous car. I just need to go get some cutting pads.

Thanks for the tip on tackling it with a plan. That is exactly what I did today. I did section by section. It seems like it takes longer but it actually wasn't too bad.

My truck has 1300 miles now and the hood already feels a bit rough with contiments. So I got the clay bar and just did the hood. So smooth now. :)

As far as wax goes, what do you guys think about the meguiar's ultimate quick spray wax? That is what I am using and it seems to work really good.

Quick spray wax makes the paint look great between washes, but won't last any longer than that. Use a real meguiars wax. Hand or machine applied.

DA will work... but if you dont feel like taking it out and doing it... you can use rubbing alchol on a soft mirco fiber... just wipe off with windex with your done and apply a coat of wax....
