Hey everyone,

i recently started throwing a P0420 code accompanied with a rattling from around the catalytic converters. I wanted to see what the most cost effective route for replacing these and the exhaust system might be? I’ll be looking to upgrade the truck next year, just need to get there.

I’ve seen OEM and OEM equivalent converters going for $150-300 each. However, I’m seeing on eBay LOTs of systems that are a total of $300 for all four. What’s the catch here? Any recommendations for bang for the buck systems?

I can’t relate specifics. I do know eBay car parts can be pretty dodgy lately so buyer beware . I’d make sure it’s from someone reputable rather than the lesser known sorts. There’s a lot that can go wrong if they use junk recycled internals and you’d have no way to know till you went to the hassle of installing it all. Just my my nickels worth 🫣

I would change your downstream o2 sensor first. it is less expensive than the cat and easier to change (more likely to go out). On my 04 4runner I put o2 spacers on the downstream sensors (pulls the o2 sensor out of the exhaust stream) and have never had a code again. I was getting them pretty regularly because of a head gasket leak that was burning antifreeze and ruining the cat. I don't live in an inspection state, so no worries about that.
