Sup guys, I just purchased a 21' limited and got the registration and was shocked it was $768. I know the DMV classifies trucks as commercial vehicles. Someone told me that by getting a camper shell and getting it changed at the DMV as a passenger vehicle the fee will drop a lot. Is this true, and if so what does the savings look like? thx!

In California, you won't have to pay weight fees. DMV will also issue you a new license plate from what I understand. So, do not remove the camper shell and drive around. Cops, CHPs can tell right away. Also it doesn't have to be a camper shell. Rooftop tents also qualify.

If you live in CommieFornia, yes. Or you can add a hard tonneau cover to the same effect. They consider pickup trucks commercial vehicles unless you de-function them or some such nonsense. Careful, or they might thing you are trying to do some work.

I live in CA and was not aware of this "loophole".
As far as you know, does "hard tonneau" mean the single piece rigid covers, with the hinges at cab end of bed?
Or could it be a "hard" tri-folding cover?
I'm planning to get the Toyota rigid tri-fold for my 2018 crewmax, so I can have full bed access when needed.

That seems counter-intuitive. Almost all of the camper shells and at least half of the tonneau covers that I see are for company trucks.

I live in the South. There would be riots if they tried something like that here!

That’s what I’m told by family that live there. They put a hard tonneau on their pickup to drop their registration price and it paid for itself in a couple of years. I always wondered why people even put hard tonneau covers on in the first place. Then it clicked when I learned that a couple years ago. Soft tonneaus, I’m told, don’t count since they can easily be converted back to a regular, open bed pickup in seconds making your truck illegal to operate without paying the extra road tax.

As for what that al makes to Commifornias... well, nothing makes sense to me there.

Is it illegal to ride in the back of a pickup truck with a camper shell?

As far as I know it has to be a single piece hard tonneau. I have no idea about the trip-fold variety but since I’m told the roll up kind don’t count I would think the fold up kind also doesn’t count?

In most states, yes, it is illegal based at least on the seat belt law. In some states, no, it is not illegal but there is often a caveat such as: all seats in the cab must be occupied first and/or freeways are excluded. Depending on where you live, it may or not be enforced; sometimes, riding around in a LaZeeBoy recliner set up in the bed might purportedly get you off the hook with 5-0. Or maybe carry potato chips, donuts, and soda and offer them to the officer in the lane next to you. I cannot confirm, nor deny, how well this works. I plead the fifth. Of course, a VW Brat would be the odd case as it has seatbelts in the bed, so...
