Slick 50 or BG fluids?

I just past 2K miles on my '11 TT. I replaced the oil at 1K and I plan to change all fluids at around 5-7K. Has anyone used Slick 50 in their 5.7? Also, I have heard of this BG service plan. it seems like they do all the service and then provide a warranty of their own (supplemental to the factory?). I couldn't find a BG center around me. But then, on the sticker the dealer gave me for the oil change interval, at the bottom, it says BG? Any ideas?

Wasn't Slick 50 debunked 10 years ago?

With today's oil, I wouldn't mess with an additive. Lubrication doesn't seem to be an issue with these vehicles.

If you want to spend your money on it , go right ahead and do it.

:dunno:

I always run synthetic. this is my first new car so I'm running conventional until the next change. I just thought the teflon might help, but I doubted it. What about the BG thing? Anyone heard of this? Could my dealership be running the BG program?

BG sells a lot of extra things that are not needed at all. Your best bet is go with what ever brand name full synthetic oil you like ie: Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Castrol, Shell, or any of the million others. By running the full synthetic you get the best viscosity and most durable oil out there. The full synth stand up better to heat and leaves less residue while still extending drain intervals to where you want to be. If you feel like that is still not enough buy an engine oil supplement w/ a friction modifier and detergent package. There is no need to run a PTFE/teflon additive package this will probably do more harm then good, PTFE is more of a marketing supplement than anything. PTFE oil supplements were created to help a customer that has oil leaking issues with their engine but not willing to spend more than $10-$15 to try and fix it. It is also designed as a long term treatment which if you have had the vehicle since 0 miles and take care of it with full synth oil you should never need.

If you are still set on the "BG" supplements you can go to their website and search for a authorized dealer in your area, be advised that BG spends a lot of money on their marketing and advertising so you are going to over pay. You can find oil supplements much more affordable that are actually identical formulations.

I wouldn't put Slick 50 in my used oil container. I was suckered in in the early 90's when that crap hit the market with outlandish claims. Made zero difference, in fact it ruined many an engine by clogging oil ports. Later they were sued by the FTC for false and unproven claims and made to pay millions in fines.

BG products are tested and proven and should not be even mentioned in the same breath as Slick 50 or other snake oil. I have been using their BG 44K fuel treatment for years and it is the best their is. Their other products are excellent too, problem is most shops push unnecessary services to make more money. That has nothing to do with whether the products themselves are good. My local Toyota dealer uses the BG tranny flush system and I will be doing that service at 50K.

I run Toyota Synthetic and BG MOA on every service. MOA stands for motor oil additive. I dont believe there is a better additive on the market and i wont run any of my cars with out it. And even though i could pinch the supplier to give it to me for free i dont. I pay for it.

Any fluid you service with BG additives at their recommended intervals started before 3/36 will come with lifetime protection for the serviced component. So for the motor oil it is 5k intervals and every other fluid is 30k. Is it sooner than the factory recommendations, yes. Does the factory offer lifetime protection if you follow their maintenance program?

And if you are wondering we dont hard sell it at our dealership, we just offer the benefits and let the customer make their decision.

To find a shop in your area you can go to BG Findashop

Jim Norton Toyota offers engines for life if you change your oil every 5K and have an engine flush every 30K at their dealership.

I highly doubt the engine flush is necessary , just like I highly doubt the BG additive is necessary but if either one of them puts you in the comfort zone then it is a good deal either way you go.

I would tell you to just run 0w-20 full synthetic and never look back. maximum protection and nothing else needed. change every 5k. If you use the maintenance package they will put in conventional 5w-20. On a cold start like 15 degrees with conventional 5w-20, my motor sounded like a diesal, that is how I found out that conventional oil was used in maintenance package vs my synthetic. With 0w-20 motor sounds smooth at cold start. Better protection, I switched at 500 miles to 0w-20.

OK. This is very helpful. I definately wouldn't buy in to a package that required the use on conventional oil. And I have heard of the BG service machines (ATF, Fuel, Power Steering Flush). I was just surprised to see it at the dealership. The warranties must run concurrent up until the factory warranty expires. While the warranties ran concurrent, I bet it would be fun to watch the Toyota and BG duke it out over who picks up the tab.

As far as the Slick 50...I knew down deep that that was snake oil, I just had to ask because I remember them offering an additional warranty as well. I am thoroughly ashamed that I asked. I don't know if I can recover my dignity.

Good News. i'm over it. I am friends with the dealership so I'm gonna grill them a bit to see what they have to say about BG. I'm sure it will be in line with what you guys have said.

OK. So I talked to the service manager at My buddy's dealership. This guy is pretty straight up and knowledgeable. I have never gotten the run-around from him. The fact that he spent 20 minutes on the phone with me just talking fluids and warranty should say something about him. He had to look some of the specifics up in the BG manuals and here's what I got from it: All of the fluid FLUSHES they do are with BG machines using BG fluids. He didn't say anything about additives except for Locking/true LSD diffs and detergents for the BG 44 fuel flush. He implied that they actually use BG ATF, but only when the customer asks for a flush. If you let them do the BG flush at the BG interval (30k on ATF) then BG gives you a 150k mile warranty. That warranty runs concurrent to the factory warranty, so BG would foot the bill once your factory warranty expires. The BG warranties are specific to the system that you use BG products to maintain. I will have the dealer do the BG service to my transmission (starting at 5000 miles and go every 30k after that) but I will just run Synthetic oil in the motor. I will probably have them do the BG service to my fuel system and my power steering system too, but I got some time on that.

I thought only the Toyota World Fluid or whatever they call it is the only acceptable fluid for the Transmissions on the 07 and newer.

BG makes a WS (World Standard) fluid. Or they make an additive to add to Toyota spec WS. Either way, it must be comparable in order to meet the WS spec or the dealer wouldn't run it. Amsoil makes a WS grade ATF, as other companies do as well. I will call my guy at the dealership and ask specifically if the BG flushes use additives or an actual BG fluid.

I have all the BG machines and use all their products at my shop and have for close to 9 years. The quality is unmatched and they stand behind all their products and 100% back the warranty. I have personally had them pay 3 claims with very little procedure. My suggestion is run a good synthetic oil and have the BG services performed at the proper intervals and your truck will love you for it. Mine does!

And to add.....the BG universal synthetic ATF is far superior to Toyota WS, don't hesitate to have the flush done with the BG

Correct. If you get the BG flush done at the dealer, they honor whichever warranty you chose from Toyota and the BG warranty kicks in after.

I just question the quality of the fluids. I'm sure they'r very good, but I will choose Reputable synthetic engine oil without their additive as opposed to conventional with the additive. And I will use the BG ATF to get the extended warranty (150k?)
