OK...i was looking for a better place to mount my Garmin GPS. I did not want it on my windshield. Besides now a days they can be considered an obstruction and you could be ticketed.

I found this very simple mount on EBay for $18.00. Simply drill a hole and mount it. I didnt think much of it until a couple other fellow Tundra owners saw it and really liked it so I thought I would share it for all to see...

Nice!! I have been trying to figure out where to mount my Garmin as well. Install instructions and a link to the mount would be nice.

Here is a link to the mount I am talking about...

MOTORCYCLE WINDSHIELD GPS ANGLE MOUNT GARMIN NUVI | eBay

I get great reception on the GPS with the location. The switch blank is easy to pull out. All you have to do is drill a hole center of the switch blank and hone it out in the back just a bit so the screw will fit inside....thats it to the installation.

No problem Tim, your welcome.

Where does your GPS cord go when you have it plugged in?? It looks like you have it hard wired, but I'm not sure.

Take a look at the last photo and you can see the power wire running along the shifter and pluged inside my center console. Would like to hard wire it in the future. I have the same mount on my Harley Street Glide so that I can take the GPS along with me.

Ok, thanks...

Wish I could rig something up like that for my phone. I use a GPS app on my phone instead of buying a regular GPS.

Here was my solution...

usb + aux for me

I dont know.. I would doubt it because the USB interface controls ipod .. probably has to be programmed into the radio.

Dont think this is unsafe at all. What I think is unsafe is having it in the window, in particular at night with the GPS light focused on your face. With the current location of my GPS I do not stare at the screen, I mainly use it to see my actual current speed do to the 37" tires I am running. In fact there are a couple of states issuing tickets for GPS's in windows.

That's a great idea, however it won't work too well with the bench seat tundras due to an in dash cup holder being mounted right below that. Some other locations will have to be thought of for mine. That's a great idea though thanks for the post.

I am convinced this is the best place to mount my GPS, although I pulled out the "plug" and saw that it had a wire connected to it. I assume that this "plug" has something to do with the heated seats I don't have. I'm not worried about unplugging that from my dummy switch cover, but my concern was keeping the power cords as clean as possible. I got to thinking that I should be able to power the GPS off of the USB port right next door. I tested the USB port with my iPhone and it charges, so I went to searching for the shortest USB to mini USB cord possible. I came across this Liquidware : 6 inch Type B-Mini USB Cable. I have never heard of this place, but I figure it is worth a shot. I am going to order the GPS mount and the cable this weekend, so once I get it in I will let you know how it all turns out.

Just made the purchase on EBAY... Thanks for the post.

Mine is windshield mounted, squished as far down to the dash as possible. It aligns to where a Mercedes star would be in my vision. The wide thingy on the cord that picks up the traffic warnings is tucked behind and out of my vision.

I'm impressed with your creativity of the mount for yours.

Got the mount installed, yet I think I might of had to do a little more trimming to get the screw to fit in the back of the switch cover due to the size of the head that was shipped with my mount. The switch cover stays in place, but a gentle tug will pull it out. Still waiting on my 6" usb to mini usb cord to arrive. I will take a picture once I get my usb cable in and can comment on the service provided by the seller. Thanks to gnyhuf for the great find!!

so what was the final outcome?

Sorry I never updated, like I said I would. Here are some pics of it installed. Overall I am very happy with the location and the accessibility of the GPS. You may be able to see that the "plug" that the mount is attached to pulls out a little bit from the dash. Although it is a little loose it has never fallen out on me, even driving down muddy, rutted dirt roads. I have purchased another "plug" to try an make it lock in the dash better, just because it annoys me.

Here is where I bought the 6" mini USB to USB cable from. Liquidware : 6 inch Type B-Mini USB Cable

I put the round suction disk that come with the suction mount on top of steering consol. blocks the speedo alittle but speed is displayed on gps, plus with gps removed it's hardly noticeable.

I used the factory mount and put it in the square space right in front of the shifter.

This was my solution to the GPS problem. Really happy with the way it turned out. It doesn't interfere with the drive buttons or the the ability to move into 4 wheel drive. For cord management I just zip tied the excess cord. cost me $1.50 in materials.
