There were a few tranny repair manual excerpts floating around on the web site try a search I bet the info is here somewhere. I've been wrenching a few years and I tend to go by feel for most anything that doesn't involve a bearing or a lug nut. I'm not saying you should also if you decide to go by feel "snug" will suffice for all the fittings you mentioned. The pan uses an o-riing so it's hard to mess that one up compared to a pan that uses a flat gasket.

Before removing one drop of fluid take the fill plug off first.

My 2010 4.6 Has a plug in the fill hole in the location of the 5.7 picture. I see a what appears to be a 24mm fill bolt on the passenger side way back at the tail. It says WS on it, is this the 4.6 model fill hole. It seems strange to have the "normal" fill blocked off??

This is all highly informative and my thanks to all the contributors. I am going to do the flush and fill with Amsoil. I haven't decided which drain method to use since I haven't poked around underneath to figure out which will work best.

I have what is hopefully not a stupid question...

After draining from the pan, then refilling with fresh, do you leave the fresh feed tube in the tranny while you run the engine to pump out the next batch of old fluid, or do you remove the feed tube, loosely install the feed plug, and then fire it up?

Thanks!

No need to replace the fill plug between fills. I pulled the fill tube out a bit so it wouldn't catch on any rotating bits.

toyturbodiesel:

When the tranny fluid reaches appropriate temperature, you remove the overflow bolt and let the fluid drains out to appropriate level...do you turn the engine off while the fluid is draining?
Leave the motor run in park while checking the fluid level. Run the tranny through all the gear positions allowing it to engage each then go to park and pull the level plug out.

I've never seen a post where Amsoil was used . Which Amsoil is WS? I know they make a superior line of oils, I'm just not familiar with that product. I just recently used an off brand, Vavoline Max Life ATF, it's WS also and works well. .

I haven't gotten the products yet. I ordered through a friend that is an Amsoil dealer their OE Fuel-Efficient Synthetic ATF. This has the WS certification. They also have their Signature Series that meets WS, but I'm not springing for that. If I towed I probably would. Once I get it all done I will post results and maybe a few photos. My truck runs great so I don't expect to notice a difference, other than draining dark and smelly old fluid and saying I did it. I'm also draining and refilling the rear differential (mine is 2WD) with Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-90.

hey guys new on here n planing on changing out my fluid here soon, great post!! as far as fluids i would think youd want the highest quality fluid you could get considering how hot transmissions get. Amsoil makes great products, but the signature series is the one that's totally synthetic. the OE and LT are mostly synthetic but still have petroleum bases and need viscosity additives which degrade w/high heat. heres a good link if you'll are interested

I'm surprised no has done a YouTube video on this. There's oil, front, rear diff and transfer but no tranny.

For a Drain and Fill it's easy, just remove the transmission 14mm drain plug and about 4 quarts comes out. AND here is a video of one way to refill it...
Fill Bolt is 24mm,
Level check plug is a 5mm hex
