This sounds logical. I swear...the more and more I think about it I should just buy a fifth wheel, throw a full size matching tire, throw it in the bed and call it a day. Just not looking forward to also buying a tonneau cover to keep prying eyes from seeing the spare in the bed.
I've got a 315/70 R17 BFG T/A mounted on a RW wheel sitting in my garage waiting to get shoved under the bed, but Coachbuilder shackles and an Expedition One rear bumper are seriously jamming me up. I've got to make it fit though- it is crazy how much room a ~35" tire takes up in a Crewmax short bed.

I'm thinking it is better to drill out the tabs and relocate them so they still secure the larger spare?

Yup, I have had my 315/70R17 under there for a couple of years.

35x12.5x18 spare tire

What ears are you referring to when you say you had to grind them off, could you show a pic

Old thread but I am in the process of putting my 35” spare in there with grinding off the two ears. Any concern with how close the tire is to the exhaust?
