I was told by a mechanic that I trust I should change the water pump on my 2010 Tundra at around 100,000 miles; currently, I'm at 110,000 miles.

I have also been told that I should simply wait until the water pump starts to leak and replace it at that time.

Do water pumps always start to fail by leaking first, or can they fail catastrophically and leave me dead in the water someplace?

Thanks.
