I'm not a member of this club yet, but hopefully very soon. I want your opinions please. I have narrowed down my choice to a Leer 100XR, with the removable front sliding window, carpeted interior and a single clothes rod mounted on the rear drivers side. I have a quote of $1,410.00 painted and installed (including state tax & minus the current coupon). What I'd like if possible are your thoughts, if you have this model, on the quality of this brand but more so on the cap itself please. I agree that the ARE Z series and Leer XQ & XL series with their frameless side windows are very cool looking and sexy and all that but I honestly like how the framed side windows of the XR matches the framed windows of the truck cab more. But I like the curved glass frameless rear door more than a flat framed rear door. This is why I selected the XR. No need for a roof rack, as I will never need to haul anything up there. No need for keyless entry, or storage lockers or cargo nets or any of that other stuff. My goal is to save as much money as possible and come away with a cap that is both functional, and good looking, that meets my needs. I am sold on the XR, but as with anything else I buy, I have to get some real world reviews first. And what better place than here? Thank you very much and feel free to PM me if you want to save space on this thread.

Thank you,
Rob

Oh, I remember you saying something about the roof rack accessory, and I thought you meant the base rails too. I re-read the post. That's a Doh! on my part.

It poured rain today and my cab leaked. Man, I am really mad. I paid high dollar and I expect this to be perfect.

Count me in please. Leer 100XR, with removable sliding front window, carpet, single clothes rod, wired hot.

This my 3rd truck, but my first Tundra and my 1st cap. Pictures just don't do it justice. Wife's first comment was "looks like the A Team truck". Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I need to de-badge it and add some Harley decals! I was reluctant at first, and since I've never had a cap I almost didn't get one this time around either but it has grown on me quick.

Bought it from Wildasin Enterprises in Hanover, Pa. - $1,441.6 out the door. Great family owned place, took an hour max for the install. Explained everything to me as they went along. Highly recommended them if you are in the market and live nearby. I shopped around and they had the lowest price, but their customer service is what sold me on them. Old school, just like it used to be.

Thanks,
Rob

ewheeler20,
I thought so too! I searched and searched and out of about 5 different places (some a lot closer to my house) this one had the best deal. I read on here that sometimes it's best to check the dealer, where you buy the truck, because they deal in volume and can get better prices. Well, they wanted over 2k for the same exact package. The owner of the place I went with said he sells about 2-3 per day which is why he can undercut everyone else. Said he only makes about 150 a cap (on the one I bought). I removed the Leer stickers from the rear window this weekend and I like the look a lot better. Now I just need to find the perfect Harley-Davidson decal for it. I'd like to go with a silver to match the TRD sticker. Or grey metal flake to match the paint.

I'm so anal about these things. hahahahaha

Oh, by the way, what is the acronym we are supposed to use now in our signature with the member number? TWAC?

I have a Leer with a frameless back door and don't have any issues at all. The side are framed to match the truck cap.

What kind of adjustments are they talking about?

Hey Justin311,
I wonder if you could use pipe insulation. The foam you wrap around your water pipes in your house. It might be tight enough to not blow out and roll with movement since it is round.

Just an idea.

I have however heard that when you wedge anything between the cab and cap you can sometimes wind up with wear marks on your paint job.

How often is the pooch back there? Would a cooler filled with ice, left open work? Sounds cheesy but that's how they used to air condition theaters in the old days. Heck for that matter, you could use plastic milk jugs, filled with water and frozen, placed in one of those large storage tubs, the ones they sell at Home Depot. And then just refreeze them when your not using them. Never need to buy ice. I bet a dozen frozen gallon blocks would chill it up nice, and you can leave the windows open for air too.

Can you tell I love animals?

hey rob,

i tried that it didn't hold..!!

i even used plastic tubes where you put the electric wiring in to give it some extra strength but since the cab and the bed can individually move, it just worked itself loose and blew away after an hour on the highway with 60 miles per hour :D dikkie :D
Hmmmm, great minds think alike. Too bad it was a failed attempt. Gotta love forums though.

How about two or three 10 speed inner tubes, cut and patched together to form one single tube? (I think someone mentioned this but I looked and couldn't find it so maybe I imagined it). And to help create a substantial joint just insert one tube into the other and glue the hell outta it. Then you could have one central inflation point that could be filled with any common air compressor/pump. I would think you only need enough pressure to keep in place and there shouldn't be that much external pressure to force the seams apart...........

Just another idea. But I think for this to work the way you want and do what you want it to you're gonna want one continuous donut.

HAHAHAHAHA, yea, and those noodles come in other shapes beside round too. Meaning a star or hex shape might be tougher to squeeze in between but it might also stay in better too.

And there's always online pool places you can buy them from. I can tell you this, from experience in my own pool, the closed cell foam versions last longer in the weather than the open cell foam versions.

I played around with the topper again today. I had just flopped it on to get it home and not really payed any attention to actually getting to sit in it's proper location.

After setting it and alligning it I tried to close and latch the hatch. It actually latched! Apperently the tempered glass has just enough flex to it that I can close the hatch properly.

I took it down some washboard roads in my area to see if I was gonna have any problems with the hatch unlatching. I'm pretty darn happy that it didn't pop open or worse, shatter from flexing.

My next step will be to paint the cap. Not a big deal. I f*%ked up and forgot this was a holiday weekend. I didn't get my paint ordered. Looks like I won't pe painting until next weekend.

I snapped a couple of pics. You should be able to see the flex in the glass. Let me know what you think.

Later

KO
I think with the right paint job on that thang you have winner! Great job.

I will be hauling my dogs on occasion so ventilation is important but I like the look of the smoother glass as opposed to the sliders.

Last minute suggestions would be appreciated!
The sliders offer more ventilation than any other type of side windows. You do however have to climb in to open them. Another drawback to consider is they will obviously allow more rain in too when open (unless you go really fast :lol5:). I opted for them on my cap for the added ventilation aspect but also because I think the framed look goes better with the truck cab black frames. That's my .02 worth.

What's your 10-20? If you live near Harrisburg PA I can recommend a great place that sells both brands.

Just ordered my ARE Z series should be in a few weeks! Got the flip down sliding back glass, standard tilt out screened vents and a headliner. I'll post up pics and get my TWAT# ;) when it comes in!
Nice! I honestly don't think either is a bad choice and all that matters is that you are happy, right?
