Many Late model Tundra and 200 series Land Cruiser owners have experienced performance and fuel economy is greatly effected by even the slightest of tire size increase. This is because the 6 spd Auto Transmission features very tall Overdrive n 5th AND 6th gear. To remedy this, Nitro Gear is now offering 4.88 Ring & Pinions. This will help improve lost economy and performance from larger tires. Also will work boost low end performance on vehicles with stock tires.

ANOTHER INDUSTRY FIRST, FROM NITRO GEAR & AXLE!

If you are running larger tires on your Tundra, 4.88 gears are the answer. We run them in my 07 sc’d crewmax with 35 & 36” tires.

The Tundra has a very tall overdrive in 5th AND 6th gear to turn low RPMS. If you install tires that are 35” or larger, the 6th gear becomes useless and all that great horsepower the 5.7L makes is wasted. With stock gears and big tires you’ll suffer from poor performance, poor economy, and irregular shifting. The 4.88 gears will help bring the motor back to the RPM it was intended to run. This will improve Economy, Performance, and shifting. This is one of the most important modifications you can make after installing larger tires on your late model Tundra.

4X4 5.7L:
Front & Rear Gears, Master kits $1511
Or
If your truck is nearly new AND you have the right tools you could get away with:
Front & Rear Gears, mini kits $979

As for traction, none of the 07+ Tundras come with an LSD (Posi), The factory “Electronic LSD” is just traction control, and is more “P.O.S.” than “POSI”. All tundras can benefit from the increased traction that an aftermarket LSD or Locker will provide. Another benefit is strength.
The Tundra uses a huge 10.5” diff that is much larger than any other ½ ton pickup produced. The problem is the factory Standard Open (non-posi) carrier is very weak by design, and has already failed in many stock pickups, this is all the more reason to add An Auburn Pro LSD ($545) or an ARB Air Locker ($1075) to the rear.

Wait! An Auburn LSD is only $545? How much labour (hours) is required, average, to install?

Also, how often does the rear diff fluid need to be changed? And are there any additives that need to be added when the fluid is changed?

Auburn

If you are doing the gear change anyways there should be no additional labor for the auburn. If you are doing only the auburn expect 4-5 hrs labor. It requires additive, but is included
