Tundra 5.7 Engine Limiter???

I just broke my 5.7 engine in last night so I ran it up to speed a few times to see what she'd do. The engine was balls out and running great with all the positive G-Force of a space shuttle launch... That was until I hit 110 mph. Then it was like someone just pulled the plug. It immediately felt like the computer was retarding the timing severely, or the engine was suddenly starved for fuel... Basically, it felt like there was a limiter on the engine.

I know it wasn't the knock sensors because I'd recently tanked up on 91 octane, mixed with about half a tank of 88 octane, and the engine showed no signs of knock.

I did install some mods a few days ago; like adding a cat-back and CAI. I don't even have 200 miles on the re-set computer since I installed the mods, so I'm wondering if that's what's causing it.

Whatever it was it was weird! I ran it four times in a row, and every time it was like hitting a brick wall as soon as I hit 110. I couldn't get a single mph more.

Has anybody else experienced this? :(

Yes all new tundras have the speed limiter. Not much we can do about it.

Don't know if this is true or not, but brother in law of mine who owns his own auto shop and always has the latest, greatest gadgets told me he could use a new programer he got to link to my Tundra computer... from there he can access a lot of the factory settings like the speed limiter, seat belt buzzer, etc. and turn them off or on!

He even went so far as to say that he may find certain options on the truck from the factory that are installed but "turned" off like alarm etc.

Supposed to take the truck in to the shop in about a week or so... Hope this will actually work on the Tundras... Will let you know all know if works and what brand etc.

Man, that would be sweet! If there's anything out there that'll let the ponies run free, I want it. There are times when I'd like to break the sound barrier.

Thanks for your post, and be sure to come back and give us the details if it's true.

Have not been able to try it out yet, but...word on the street is that the high end engine scan tool (OBD 2)? should be able to remove the limiter and the seat belt chime etc.

My truck was in the body shop for a while because some ahole hit my back bumper. I should be able to hook up my truck up soon.

Does anybody know if its true?

Why is it I wonder that some top at 110, some at 115 and others at 120?? Mine tops at 110. I'd heard of others at 115 (can be seen on youtube actually), never seen 120 though. I thought originally that the US models were topping at 115 and the Canadian models (like mine) top at 110 (178km/h). Seems kind of odd for a mfg to have so many different limits on the same basic truck. I wonder if it goes by model line, like reg. cab, d-cab and crew max?

Just what we need....high profile 4x4 trucks going 140mph down the hwy!! Ever driven an old muscle car that would go that fast??? They start to lift and steering gets real loose because they have no down force and there is a ton of air rushing under the car. If they weren't so heavy they would fly..LOL. Oh well..............if my truck would go that fast I probably would try it once or twice and then a third time for good measure...he he he.

100 mph or greater in FL is reckless driving. Go directly to jail, bail, see a judge. No thanks. Worked all that out of my system over 20 years ago.
I can tell you this. For some real excitement, take a street bike,(not a cafe racer type), at least a 650cc, down a gravel road, fast as you dare. Over 80 mph, things begin to change. The gravel becomes a fluid, the bike a jet ski. Faster than 85mph, you can turn the handlebars all the way, either way, the bike will continue forward in a straight line. You can ride back and forth over that center hump of gravel like it's wave in the water. Just lean a little, the bike will respond. Don't use the front brake though, it will all end in tragedy.

Some of us would like the option to be able to upgrade the suspension, fit it with racing tires and rims and run it at the track. I'd like to take mine out to Bonneville during speed week and she what she'll do top end.

No ticket, and hopefully no wreck or killing someone, but if it happens it'll only be my truck and me who gets damaged or totalled.

I Guess If Your Have Your 5.7 Tundra Chipped, Lowered And Run Speed Rated Tires, You Can Achieve Speeds Like The Supercharged Ford Lightnings And Srt-10 Rams (over 140mph) Without Problems.

The official speed limit listed in the manufacturers spec is 111 mph. It either retards the ignition timing or restricts fuel delivery after this speed is reached. I've done it in my 2007 & the behavior under the hood is the same as when you run out of gas. Since most Tundra owners are generally a brighter bunch, I'm not totally uncomfortable with these guys running their Tundras faster than 100. Kidding (about the uncomfortable part).

I think these trucks will do 140 easy.. when i tested mine out i had good torque untill i hit the limiter at like 111 and the speed incresed from momentum to like 120-125....thats good torque at that speed... now once i put this s/c and headders then program it in... you can just start calling me the silver bullet!!!!!!lol first 08 tundra to hit 200mph...lol

Usually 300 (iah) RWHP won't push a brick that weighs over 5000lbs past 140. I would bet bone stock these would run about 132 to 134 max.

Heck the SRT8 Challenger only hit 152mph (if i recall from the Top Gear episode) at Bonneville and they put down between 348 to 362RWHP depending on the dyno...
