I struggled with the choice between the Toyo MT and the Nitto Trail Grappler for about 2 months. I read everything I could, and talked to a lot of people too.
I would bet you a lug nut that:
Off-road Performance-Wise, they're identical.
Wear-Wise, they're very similar.
Noise-Wise, the Nittos are a little bit quieter.
Price-Wise, they're very similar.
Appearance-wise, everyone agrees the Nitto looks more aggressive.
For me, I wanted the biggest I could get on stock TRD wheels, with a leveling kit, so I went with the Nitto in a 295/70/18. Toyo didn't offer that size, so it made the decision easy.
After a few months of driving on them, I still love them as much as the day I got them put on. I've done a lot of muddy, hilly trail driving and and I have been amazed by how much traction they provide. They definitley put a smile on my face off road.
On-road, they are smooth, quiet, and go down the road as good as the stock tires. They don't have quite the cornering grip as the stock tires, but that's not why I bought them.
They're wearing really well, and from what I've heard, they should last 50K. That's pretty impressive, if you ask me!
I really don't see how the Mud Grapplers could be much better. And for as loud as they're famous for being, not to mention the poor treadwear, there's no way I'd consider them. I'd get a Super Swamper if I was putting them on a bad-a$$ Jeep or something.
I've heard great things about both tires, so either way, you'll be happy.
Discount Tire will match just about anyone's prices, including their web-site's price. I've been buying from them for 20 years and they've always had the best price, and taken care of me on service, replacements, etc.
Let us know what you choose!
