While I'm still trying to full "understand" a rear drive line with NO zert fittings..........I want to point out that the zert fittings can get very dirty and covered up with grime. Especially if they've been greased and had a little overrun of grease that wasn't cleaned off at the time and which will gather all kinds of shit. All of this making them a little difficult to identify. Especially if you're not 10,000% sure of what you're looking for.

Soooo...new Tundras have no rear driveshaft grease zerts? Seems odd they would phase out the rear zerts, and not the front. And Mcgov...how is it that you have 8 zerts, and I have 5? So strange. Almost like spicer is providing Toyota with whatever they have available at the moment.

Not to be "that guy," but they're generally called "Zerk" fittings:

Some kind soul posted a lube chart from a 2015 FSM, that looks just like yours--I've attached it, as my copy seems to be a bit bigger/easier to read.

You'll notice some Zerks are supposed to be hit with Lithium-based grease, and others with Molydenum Disulphide (depending upon how "anal" one wants to get). Since I already have one grease gun set up with "moly," for the backhoe, I guess I'll "play by the rules" and give each the flavor it likes (though I'm sure ANY grease is more than most get, right?) LOL

Where did you get your FSM?
Do you have both hard and electronic copies? I have a 2014 Tundra, and would like to purchase/"obtain" an FSM for a 2014, without paying more than I have to....

I have the FSM only electronically. I don't recall eggzactly where I got it from. No hard copy. But with the .pdf at over 12,000 "pages" a hard copy might need a dolly cart to move around.

Yes. Your copy is cleaner. Mine was a scan of a print out and I posted it before I realized I had a good, pure copy already. Thanks for the cleaned up copy.

Thanks, that’s exactly what I have...as in not a double cardan joint. Sounds like they are phasing out the zert (zerks, zirt, zirks?? Lol) so this may be why we are all having discrepancies.

What is your bed size/cab type?

The reason I ask is that I believe you are correct, but perhaps not because they are phasing zerks, themselves, out? Based on McGov's pic, it appears that not all of these trucks have an actual "double cardan joint." And that may account for the differing number of zerks members are counting.

I'm not near my 2014 DCLB atm, but I suspect that shorter wheelbase trucks may not have double cardan joints, which is why I'm curious to get under my own truck, since it's a DC with the 8' bed.

The diagram in the first link, below, shows that a double cardan joint actually has two "spiders" (the 4-way "cross" that has the four, roller-bearing caps). These spiders are linked by what is called a "coupling yoke" in the diagram and write-up, below:

So, less "spiders" = less "zerks," right?

EDIT:
Wait--scratch that. McGov's 2017 does not appear to have a "double cardan joint," and yet he personally greased 8 Zerks. So there goes that theory....

So, it seems either of your two theories could be correct, i.e., since thearborbarber's 2018 has ZERO zerks, it would seem Toyota is phasing them out. Or, perhaps Toyota is using both "Zerked" and "Zerk-less/Lifetime" U-joints, depending upon what Spicer sends them on a given day? :dunno:

Hopefully a Toyota tech will chime in. :)


Anyway, on a related note, the screenshot I attached, below, entitled "Spherical Centering Bearing in Double Cardan.jpg" shows the static view of the "spherical centering bearing" (that I never knew was there--LOL) inside a double cardan joint.

The (rather dense read) linked below does support the idea that double cardan joints are used for longer wheelbase vehicles, when it says:
"A popular use of double cardan joints is when two driveshafts are required over a long distance between the transmission and axle."
But it's worth scrolling to the bottom of the write-up linked below, which shows a "see through" animation of a double cardan joint, in motion--it's pretty cool.
