Front bumper removal question..

1200 Views 7 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  FirefighterCT
I am considering taking my front and rear bumpers off to get them powder coated.. my question is for the front bumper.

Can I take the bumper off and still drive the truck for ~a week while the bumpers are getting PCd? Or are there going to be too many plastics/fenders/wires hanging and moving around for that to be an option?

I have to get on the highway to get to and from work, so it will need to be able to withstand 70+ mph.

Having removed mine I don't think you will have any problems with it being drivable. I would however be concerned about getting a hefty ticket for operating on the roadway without a bumper, especially the front bumper.

Good point.. didnt think about that. (I will probably still risk it)

That my brother is why you're KRAZY :D
I have to disagree. The bumper that you actually see, is not the true bumper. The real bumper is behind the chrome thing that we call a bumper. It can either be an aluminum or composite channel bolted to the frame horns.

As long as your lights and signals work you are leagal to drive the truck. Unfortunatly the PO might not agree because they are uninformed.

Yeah I am more concerned with things I might expose to more wind by removing the chrome bumper.. I might be wrong but In my mind there would be plastics and things like that getting effected.

Guess Ill just have to dive into it. Anyone have a bumper removal sticky?
I bought an AllDataDIY.com subscription when I did the whole front end on my truck. Pretty good pictures and shows all the fasteners. For 30 bucks, I thought it was well worth it. It only costs 16 bucks to renew the subscription.

If you have decent machanical skills it may not be worth it to you, just plan on taking lots of pics as you take it apart.

Looking forward to the coated bumper pics when you are done.
