Toyota distributor and entrepreneur Jim Moran, who founded JM Family Enterprises and built it into one of the largest privately held companies in the United States, died today at Hillsboro Beach, Fla. He was 88.

JM Family Enterprises Inc., of Deerfield Beach, Fla., is best known for being the parent of two companies.

One is Southeast Toyota Distributors LLC, which distributes Toyota brand vehicles to 169 Toyota dealerships in the nation's Southeast region, independent of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. The other is JM&A Group, a provider of a wide array of dealership insurance and warranty products.

But over the years, JM Family has been fruitful and multiplied. The diversified automotive company is made up of six business units, which acquired six companies just since 2004.

Its revenues grew from $8.2 billion in 2005 to $9.4 billion in 2006. It expects its revenues to reach $11.1 billion this year. JM Family is ranked by Forbes magazine as the 18th largest privately held company in the country.

Moran, who also founded the AutoNation Inc. dealership group, was active in the leadership of JM Family until his death, the company said in a statement today.

JM Family provides one or more services to more than 20,000 dealerships annually, said Colin Brown, CEO of JM Family, in an article published Monday, April 23, in Automotive News.

"No leader in our industry or community has ever been more accomplished, respected or beloved than Jim Moran," Brown said today.

Said Bruton Smith, chairman of Sonic Automotive Inc.: "In any industry there are builders and there are wreckers. You can build an 80-story building in a city and it takes a lot to accomplish that. It does not take a lot for a wrecker to tear the building down. It is the same way with a business or with life. Jim Moran was a builder. ...

"He brought a lot of new things to the business," Smith said. "He was a promoter. He changed the way business was done in his world. ... He was an affable man. I think he had fun in the business. He enjoyed it tremendously."

Moran's automotive retail career began in 1943, when he began selling used cars at his Sinclair gas station. He eventually established himself as Chicago's "Jim Moran the Courtesy Man," becoming the No. 1 Hudson dealer in the country, and later the No. 1 Ford dealer in the world. The company said Moran was the first auto dealer in the United States to advertise on television.

He became a Toyota distributor in 1968 and was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1995.

Moran is survived by his wife, Jan, daughters Arline McNally and Pat Moran, his son Jim Moran Jr., seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Staff reporter Donna Harris contributed to this report.
