Do black wheels fade over time?

Perhaps the owner didn't take care of the wheels, but yesterday I saw a truck with some black fuel wheels and they looked oxidized and somewhat discolored in areas. I really like the fuel kranks and mavericks. Never owned a black painted wheel and was wondering if this happens to most black wheels over time? Otherwise, I may have to stay with machined wheels.

I have noticed my powdercoated black rims have not held up so good to the chemicals the local car wash uses. They still look great from 5 feet. The powder coating was done about 3.5 years ago and I never had an issue before this though. I think its mostly in the care.

Chemicals used to clean them can take a toll on them. I've had a couple of different sets and the set that only saw soap and water never faded. The ones I used wheel cleaner on for brake dust got splotchy/lighter over time.

Good thing about black wheels, cover em with tire shine when you do your tires and they look like new again.
