I have a 2007 Tundra 5.7 with 45,000 miles on it. I hardly drive it, because I have a commuter car. I drive it about twice a month putting only 100 a month. I do not tow or haul, maybe once a year. I have new oil in it (Mobil 1 5w20). During start ups when I have not driven it for a week or two, there a a noise like something is not getting lubricated. Once the engine is going everything is good. After it starts up and I do some driving its like normal and the start ups are Ok, for instance if I go to the store, when I start up, its Ok no noise. I only here it when the truck has been sitting for a few days or weeks. I also tried some experiments....I would drive it all day and the next morning start it up and its fine no noise. Then I drive all day and start it up a week later I hear the noise. I know this sounds weird, but I want to see if anyone is having similar problem. I still have a warranty but the dealership I go to is dumb as rocks.

I have experienced this also. After I bought my diesel the Tundra sometimes stays parked for longer periods. Then when started it sounds like valvetrain noise.....lifters bleed down over time and so the valve lash is too loose for a brief instant after the engine is started until the lifters pump up. The 5.7 has hydraulic lifters doesn't it?

Your description is very accurate to what is happening to my truck. I'm not sure about the lifters bleeding down but how did you fix it? My whole thinking is when a new tundra sits on the lot for a week or however long and a potential costumer starts it up; I'm almost certain that this noise we're describing does not happen. Wonder if Toyota knows about this?

I have not attempted to fix this, as all the hydraulic lifter equipped vehicles I have owned exhibited the same behavior to varying degrees, and they all lasted many years. I suspect the dealers avoid this by simply starting and running the vehicles at regular enough intervals that the bleed down is avoided.

are your running synthetic motor oil? If not I would switch.

I was thinking a grinding noise as in metal to metal, I wasn't thinking a tapping or clicking noise... My bad. When the aip shuts off they make a squeak kinda noise as the air bleeds off.

Valvetrain noise is normal.

It is just normal bleed down, the only thing you can do is start it more often

Mine rattled when using conventional oil. I switched mine to synthetic after 1000 miles and never had any issues, then I tried the free Toyota oil change at 10k, and the following morning my truck rattled like hell. I checked the invoice from Toyota and it stated synthetic 0-20, When I checked the part number the oil was conventional, Toyota dealership stated my truck did not have synthetic from factory, so they use conventional. Asked about why I was on a 10k oil change set up by them?? They changed oil to supposed synthetic 0-20, seemed somewhat better but I was still not happy, I then drained out oil and refilled with mobil1, minimal noise on cold start since. No more Toyota Cares Less service.

I started mine earlier this evening to get the pregnant gf a milkshake and had the same diesel sounding issue. I drive my truck regularly and did some driving today also. Typically, my Tundra seems to be fine (no engine noise) when I run it throughout the day. But, if it cools off, it starts it all over again. '08 DC 5.7 4x4 TRD 43,000 miles. Certainly, this can't be normal. By the time I got to Dairy Queen, the engine rattle worried me to the point that I shut her down while I was ordering in the drive thru. However, if I should drive it to the dealership to get this checked, it will be warmed up enough to not make this noise. What gives??

I have the 2013 5.7. This problem get worse with cold as well. This morning i started the truck which was sitting over night. The engine sounded like no oil was in it for about 3-5 seconds then all fine for the day. im very concerned about the wear issue on the engine but dont know what to do about it.

Without hearing the sound, I would say you’re hearing one of the timing chain tensioners chattering until oil pressure builds up, since they are hydraulic tensioners. Lots of posts and videos describing the noise.
Probl this .
Perhaps run a can of Sea Foam or Risiolen engine / oil cleaner thru it and change the oil again. READ DIRECTIONS .

IF you really think its a bearing or something bad , do an oil sample analysis <40$ . Then you have a real answer to " is it bad "

Make a point to drive that truck at sustained highway speeds an hour out and an hour back at least once a month, and don't hesitate to go WOT a few times on the return trip (Italian Tuneup). You need to burn off all of the condensation inside the engine, and this will burn off some carbon buildup as well. If the cold start noise continues, I would use AST oil system cleaner right before the next oil change.
