Brake shield

So I was hearing a rubbing sound on the way home from work today and I stopped to look at my front wheels and noticed a sheet of rusty metal inside my wheel. Made it home, took front left wheel off and saw that most of my brake shield had disintegrated. I did my best to remove the rest of it to make the wheel at least turn noise free. So, am I needing to replace these( I’ll do both fronts)? How important are they? I don’t really trailer or tow much. Don’t live in the mountains. Is this something that a Saturday mechanic can do? Saw a lot of posts about the rears, not much about fronts or completely corroded ones. Thanks

you need to pull the wheel bearing to replace it, I did my driver side in 17' since it was completely broken from salty roads. I did pull the wheel bearing without breaking anything since I replaced it a year before, but your should replace the oil seal when you do it. The brake shield protects the caliper, rotor and pads so without it those will wear faster, other than that for me the salty roads make me rebuild calipers+ change rotors before the pads are worn out.
