I couldn't find a good list of common problems for the 2007 Tundra. My information is specifically about the 4x4 5.7. The truck is great, However the intent of this post is to collect a list of common issues so a owner can take preventive actions and learn what to watch out for.
Please do not cloud this thread with Positive comments about the 2007. Let's keep it to the point. Besides, we all love the Tundra, you don't need to waste energy telling us what we know
My experiences:
Secondary Air Intake Pump (Common complaint from 80-140km)
Symptoms: dash lights (check engine + 4Lo + VSC OFF + skid mark), limp mode when valves stuck open, only the engine light when stuck closed. Especially active issue in cold enviro (< -10c).
Quick solution: Can clear codes to keep moving, disconnect battery if you don't have a code reader. This took me out of limp mode as long as the valve was not stuck open at the time.
Permanent solution: The AIP is about $3500 to have Toyota replace. It is a common problem in the Tundra. The function of the AIP is for emission reduction. They had a poor design where as the part's interior shell has foam which can come dislodged then cause valves (flaps) to get stuck. My issue started after I had a fuel system flush from a Mr. Lube. Not sure if that triggered it.
You can buy bypass kits which will have your truck back to normal again. They are about $200 on EBay. Worked for me. I asked a well respected mechanic if it would have long term consequence and it wasn't believed so. Kind of a PITA to install but easy enough (really really not as easy as they advertise).
Starter failure (common complaint from 80-160km)
Symptom: You will usually get one chance to see it coming. As you try to start the Tundra you will hear a click and it won't turn over at first but will start at another try. This is important to notice and be very cautious over the next few weeks.
Solution: Replacement. No quick fix to get going again. It's quoted for 5-7 hours shop labor and a couple hundy for the part. There are great instructions in other posts here.
Undercarriage recall
They took my truck and but a black coating on the frame, apparently they had corrosion issues.
