Recently I took a trip from Tampa to visit my Daughter in Jacksonville and stayed at a nearby hotel. When I got up in the morning to start my truck there was a loud rumbling and I knew right away what had happened.
Someone went under my truck during the night and quickly cut out the catalytic converter and O2 sensor on the passenger side, and probably would have tried to get the other one had it not been for the alarm going off.
I was able to get the truck back home and had an after market converter installed with a new Denso OEM sensor.
Now in order to start the truck I have to turn the key on and wait a few seconds before turning it over. Also...I have to throttle the truck easily before getting up to speed or it will shut down.
Does anyone know whether the system can be calibrated so that the computer recognizes the new catalytic converter?
Thanks

The engine may be going into closed loop too soon. It should only do this when the 92 sensors are heated up and possibly when coolant heats up. You might have some corrupted wiring,(short).

Thanks for your reply. The startup problem occurs when the engine is cold and this entire problem started after the catalytic converter was cut out and removed. My question is if the driver side catalytic converter is the factory Toyota one and the passenger side was replaced with an aftermarket could that be causing the computer to do weird things do to different back pressures and can the system be recalibrated to compensate?
No, the engine design requires a certain exhaust volume passthru

  • did they weld in a replacement or use a full pipe replacemenr.
  • did they add a bunghole for the o2 sensor
  • did you use a scanner to confirm that o2 sensors are operating correctly
  • it's also possible they damaged the fuel lines.
