Advice on a simple but good code reader, model and prices approx?

Autel has a number of inexpensive code readers like this one for about $ will read engine codes (generic OBDII plus manufacturer specific codes)....

I would suggest you consider spending a little more (about $100) and get a Bluedriver which is the one I recently upgraded to. Besides the engine codes, it has the advantage of being able to read codes in other modules including anti-lock braking system (ABS), air bag system (SRS), transmission and HVAC.

I have one of these in my Tundra. It will handle DTC's and does a lot of other neat stuff also.
