Trump is not a seasoned politician. It's kind of an advantage for him that he speaks plainly and isn't polished. People expect less of him in those scenarios. It associates him more with the common man than her. He never needed to be as smooth as polished as she was. He simply needed to get good shots in about her record, remind everybody that she's been in the system a long time without doing anything, and come away not sounding like a douchebag to the American people. This time he managed that.
The question about the tape, no, he didn't get away from it very smoothly. But really, Cooper wasn't letting it go. In that situation it's up to Trump to move the moderator off of it. A more seasoned politician could have done it seamlessly. But the fact is, he needed to do it. After his first answer that he was sorry and embarrassed, Cooper came back for more. Basically asked him if he'd ever committed sexual assault. The plan had probably been to hammer him over it until he melted down. People focused on critiquing his delivery will remember that he was clumsy about it. Most others will remember that he managed to do it and moved onto slamming her.
With the emails, she needs to keep getting hit on that. It has become pretty clear that she was guilty but the FBI bent to political pressure and let her off the hook. All sorts of interesting things have come out about it since. The latest being the FBI handed immunity deals like candy to various aides of hers before closing the case. That's normally something done to assist a successful prosecution. In this case it looks like there was an understanding to let them all put criminal activity behind them in a case everyone knew would go nowhere. It has to be hammered on until the end to remind the American people that her wealth and privilege got her off the hook for things others would go to jail for.
The cost of fuel to operate a 6000 pound 400 horsepower half ton that does 0-60 in under 7 seconds is kind of like the price of oil changes for a Porche 911. If you have to ask you probably can't afford it.
