"Cable Cutting" - Getting rid of Cable/Satellite TV

I cut the cable (canceled service) almost 10 years ago. I want to know if any of you have done it and if so, which devices you use on your TV/Entertainment System to watch the shows/movies/etc. that you like.

I have a (and swear by) WD TV Live Hub Media Center and a Vizio CoStar (Google TV).

I've just ordered a 2015 MXQ TV BOX MX Amlogic S805 Quad Core Set top Box IPTV Android 4.4 XBMC 4K WIFI Airplay Miracast box from Aliexpress. I chose it because it plays the ISO file format, which none of the other new well know brands do. WD was the last one to do it (that I've seen).

I built my own home theater PC years ago. I still use it once in a while when I want to do browsing on my 65 inch 4K Sony.

But, both the Sony in the Samsung in our bedroom have built-in apps so we use those most of the time now. I also have a couple Apple TVs that we use, mostly for airplay.

I think I could survive on Netflix, antenna and Kodi.

I cut mine back in february.. I live in LA and most of the reason why I kept direct was to watch my dodgers.. Once that wasn't possible, I got irritated and cut the cord..

So now I use amazon prime for any shows I wanna watch, 1.99 an episode is better than 120 bucks a month.. We have netflix for movies.. I also put all of my DVD movies (about 350 movies) on a hard drive in 720P and use plex media server software to stream them..

It took a month to get use to not having it, but now, don't miss it..

I have amazon fire TV in the garage and main living room, and apple tv in the bedroom..

I get 60Mb download and 5Mb upload speeds, no complaints!

Yeah, I watch less than an hour or two of TV a week, if not a month, so Netflix is all I really need, too. However, the kids watch a little bit more and need some more range. Not to mention that when mother-in-law is here she wants to watch sports. So, I'm hoping the IPTV/KODI stuff will cover that base for us.

Which format do you use most? I use ISO for just about everything.

It looks like we're just two cities apart.

We've also only got the one TV which is in the "family room" or whatever it's called. So, no real need for Chromecast or Fire sticks or anything like that, but I do have a Chromecast which I think is pretty slick.

Speed also isn't an issue for us.

Damn you and your amazing upload speed! haha.. Where at in SoCal? I work in LA and live in Long Beach..

I have everything.. Chrome cast, both fire TV's, apple tv, xbox 360 and ps3..

Apple TV's interface is great, but when playing media from my server, it does not let me stop and resume, starts the movie over..

The full sized Amazon fire TV works great, I like the layout (Apple TV is better) but the latency is great, and Plex works great on it (Plex does let you resume movies)

I like chrome cast, but its pretty limited.. Its casting works great though..

If anyone has ever thought about doing a media server, Plex works great..

Cool

Kodi + Genesis = Freedom

My internet speed penis is larger. Should be over 300, but I'm experiencing some shrinkage at the moment.

The only problem with Kodi is the buffering

Genesis is an addon that you can add to Kodi. It is pretty much THE addon to have as it works with track.tv as well. There is a learning curve to know the ins and outs of everything, but well worth it.

The attached pics are of my kodi setup pulling from Genesis to my library.

I usually don't have buffering issues with HQ High Quality feeds. Thinking about using real debrid for premium server access so I can stream 1080p without the long buffering.

So the point is, cable and satellite are going the way of horse harnesses. Or Blockbuster rented CDs. Or V8s (please not that!)

Can we reverse the question? Is there any reason not to cut the cord?

2003 Tacoma 4WD. 2005 Tundra, Carolina Dirt Road Metallic (traded)
2007 Tundra XS-P, dark green. Perhaps the very best overall vehicle I've ever owned, traded for:
2015 Tundra TRD pro, Inferno dual cab.
Lotus cars: 1974 Europa, 2005 Elise (track prep), 2011 Evora S
2015 Honda Civic Si It's orange too. Great little daily
2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed. Best car on the road.
2019 Lexus LC500. The V8 barks!
