True. Interestingly enough, I have been able to interweave my career here in the Midwest with my cultural source back in the Far East and complete the otherwise pronounced "void" and sense of "self" with a good balance of my Third Culture Kid disposition while maintaining an equal and sustainable lifestyle that is "typical Midwestern Family" as well as richly rewarding multinational professional.

Fortunately as well... there are SEVERAL fine eateries in Detroit as well as Columbus area that are FANTASTIC reward for regular trips geared around work but delighted by lunch and evening hour necessity for a meal... so I think I'll make it!

PS: ANYONE in the Detroit area wanting FANTASTIC RAMEN... here's THE PLACE to stop in:

"MATSUCHAN RAMEN" (Pronounced "Mah' Chan Ra' Men")

Matsuchan, Canton - Restaurant Reviews - TripAdvisor

Matsu Chan Restaurant, Canton, MI : Reviews and maps - Yahoo! Local

Matsu Chan (Canton, MI) | Offbeat Eats

^^^ There's a few links with reviews and some details. Regardless of the VERY FEW naysayers, this place is FANTASTIC! (Overall reviewers agree as well!)

I make it here as OFTEN as my schedule allows when I'm in Motor City area... and prefer THIS place to the high-dollar Japanese restaurants in the area which are also good.

In 2008, I was in Tokyo on October 31st. It happened to coincide with the weekend and end of my business trip, so instead of staying in the usual local business hotel for the last night before I flew out, I set my reservation up to put me smack-dab in downtown Tokyo so I could "hit the town" on that last night! I ended up with some friends partying all over the "Roppongi" (six trees) district, and for those not in the know, Roppongi is a VERY happening place!

Of course, MY meanderings were to a limited few locations, I DID manage to capture a smattering of the ENERGY of Halloween in Tokyo on that particular night... here are some shots:

^^^ That last couple shots is in a "Gaijin Bar" and the server is an Aussie chick who was there on several of my visits. I have another shot somewhere from a different night and trip with her in it. Yes, she is hot.

BTW....

I read your argument regarding the culture of America. I like it. Its well thought out and using the "Me, myself, and I" to grab the attention of the audience is genius. You already had my attention before you got to the meat of your explanation and its genius. You have us on our toes waiting for the first opportunity to jump down your throat.

I think I'm gonna read it again.

Wow! Thank you for the kind words!

I have lots more pics and "stories" if people don't get too bored by it all... so I'll just stick with it as long as it gets some views and support like that!

Having grown up in Japan as a youngster, and later weaving into my life through my career and regular visits, it still makes up a good part of my life's adventures and provides GREAT photo ops for food and different STUFF!

Today I was in Detroit area and ate at a great Japanese restaurant for lunch! Just had "beef curry", so nothing "special", but this place doesn't use the "pre-made" stuff, but makes it from scratch, so it was GREAT! I'd have taken a picture per usual, but was with the "Shyacho" of a company (President) and didn't feel it appropriate to be PHOTOGRAPHING THE MEAL he was treating me to! LOL!

Next time...

^^^ Well... that's NOT Japan... but since it's ON THE WAY or WAY BACK from Japan sometimes... I thought I'd throw this shot of Waikiki I took a few years ago when I stopped in Hawaii to visit a best friend from Japan days... he lives right on the hill in Honolulu now, so we had some great views to enjoy during that stay!

A friend of mine who was living in Tokyo was apparently NOT putting her garbage into the pick-up area per the proper protocol. As she was the ONLY foreigner in the building, we all KNEW this sign was "carefully" translated for HER SAKE.

...alas... still not sure WHAT THE HECK she was doing wrong... and so her garbage kept getting put out the way she always had.

One day, another apartment patron "caught her in the act" and quickly came running over to politely SHOW her how to package her trash properly!

Funniest part... the lady couldn't stop saying "Aimu Solly! Aimu Solly!" the whole time she was helping correct Rapunzel's behavior!

Japanese courtesy... you just can't beat it with Western ignorance!!!

LOL! Actually, "doughy balls with octopus PARTS" baked inside them! They are GREAT! (See the tentacles in the one photo?)

These things are just super on a cold evening... but if you POP the WHOLE THING into your mouth FRESH from the iron, they will absolutely SCALD your mouth! (Ask me how I know!)

LOL! Glad you "bit"! Actually, we were at a roadside stand where they make these in downtown Tokyo (they are all OVER the place!) and a Canadian guy was with us who LOVES EVERYTHING new and unusual, and JUMPS at any chance to try something new with reckless abandon... so we bought a couple "boats" of these, then no sooner did we take our orders, than he says "CHEERS!" and POPS one in his mouth before I could WARN him that they are PIPING HOT INSIDE, and about gags it back out as he starts moaning about how there was now a HUGE FLAP OF SKIN hanging loosely from the roof of his mouth and his tongue and UVULA were SCALDED and no longer functioning well enough to TASTE the darn thing!

...meanwhile... the other dude with our group... somewhat of a clown, was noting that you could actually get the tentacled legs to STICK to your tongue and "flick" them around like they were alive!

Yeah... we have fun every time we go over...
