Understand Off-Road Tire Size Measurements with CARiD

Searching for a new set of tires for your ultimate off-roader is rather tricky process, no matter if you're doing this for the first time or if you've done this a hundred times before. Having at least the general idea of which type and size of off-road tires you need is perhaps one of the most important factors when one is searching for a set of replacements. To make you life a bit easier, our tech expert, Timothy, has created yet another technical article, which will provide truck owners with more information on off-road tire sizes, tread patterns and available larger tire options.

We have also included a comparison tire size chart of the most common off-road tire sizes and their metric equivalents, so it will be convenient for you to look them up when needed.

Nice article.

It would be good to point out that you need to check exact specs, since they often differ from the listed size. For instance the 35x12.5s are usually only ~34.6" dia and 12.5" wide on a 10" rim (which is a wider rim than most people use). Width comparisons need to be normalized for the same rim width, with the tire width typically changing about 40% of the wheel width. For instance a tire that is 12.5" on a 10" rim would be ~12.1" on a 9" rim.

2016 SR DC Long 4x4 5.7L. Intermittent wipers added (?!). MB TKO 18x9 +25. Hankook Dynapro ATM 325/65r18 (34.6x13) Future Offroad RV plans: Bed removed, homebuilt camper installed. Rear seat removed to make room for storage and bikes. King or ADS shocks with 700 lb springs, ~2" lift (may cheap out though). Rear leaves, maybe air bags. And more!

Thanks, I totally agree, that's a very good point.
