Double Flat w/BFG Rugged Trail T/A!!!

Hi,

I was driving on a well used logging road in Northern Maine, when my warning light came on that I was losing air pressure. Stopped my 2008 Toyota Tundra TRD Double Cab to check out my tires, and watched in horror as my passenger tires front and rear slowly went FLAT! I have the stock tires BFG P275/65/R18 Rugged Trail T/A. Not "Rugged" at all!!

Must have hit a sharp stone - hole was in the same area on each front and rear tire!

So, now, I'm looking for a set of replacement tires. Don't laugh, but my dream tire will have the following qualities:

(1) a tire that will give me the most off road protection (10 Ply);

(2) handle rain and snow;

(3) not be a hard riding, and a noisy tire during extended highway driving.

(4) can I go up in size from 275 to 285 with my 18" wheels?

Ok, what tire types.models can you recommend for me, and thanks so much for your help!!!

Good Year Wranglers Silent Armor, research this one, and yes you can upgrade to that size, but I heard you might have to remove the skid plate, or shave something in the inside so it doesn't rub.

Gotta agree with Beer on this as well. I also like the ProComp Xtreme ATs and the Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ.

Beericus,

My wife called AAA and they contacted some guy who knew the area where we were "flattened-out". He came out, removed the offending tires, plugged them on the spot and we were good to go again.

Mongo,

How about a link to that Toyo thread, BTW is this the same Toyo that makes Kerosene heaters?

PLEASE, any more suggestions?????? One dealer suggested the General Grabber AT2 10 ply. Any comments?

Some of those roads in Northern Maine are topped with shale and are known to be very hard on tires. We hunt up there and used to bring two spares on week-long trips. My rear BFG also took a hit but it was on the inside sidewall. It took three plugs to get it to hold air. I switched to Nitto Terras which are very close to the Toyo (who owns Nitto). Side by side the tread looks the same but the sidewall on the Nitto appears to be a bit more rugged. Also when flexing unmounted sidewalls, the Nittos are firmer. They also cost $10 or $20 more per tire.

Hey Fred...what are you going to do with the BFGs? I run mine in the summer and they are about used up. Plugs don't bother me so I would be interested...So. Maine.

'08 DCLTD 5.7 54K miles and I still love my truck despite 2 front diffs. under warranty.

Hi Oil mpg,

My place is south of Houlton, Maine. Where do you hunt?

It looks like I will have a brand new spare, the two plugged tires and the other two BFGs available, although I have no idea what their worth. I have 16,000 miles on them. Stock tires.

Sounds like you need at least a 10 ply up there

We hunt in the western mountains between Eustis and Jackman although we did some moose hunting out of St. Agatha a couple of years ago. I'm doing a job in Millinocket so I could pick up the BFGs there. I have the factory spare so I don't really need another one. Is $200 for 4 a fair price?
