18" vs. 20"

I want to buy some new rims and tires for my new Tundra, but don't know where to start. I like the look of 20" tires, but I also like the look of 18" tires with more rubber. Which is better 18" or 20". I tow a boat (4500 lbs) , and love to hunt/fish/ etc. So this truck by no means stays on the road at all times. The 4wd gets plenty of use, I'm looking for a powder coat black rim with some beefy tires. Dont know what size rim to get, or tires. Any help is much appreciated. What are some of the benefits of a 20" or 18"?

Well you can have the look of the 20" rims and the beefy tires if you get a small lift. that way you get both of the looks. =]

How much of a lift are we taking about here? If i were to go the route of the lift I would much rather prefer the price of a 3" leveling kit. I dont think lifting my whole truck is in my budget, unless I win the lotto or get a raise...either or I'm SOL

well if you are going to go off road I would choose the 18's because if you go with a 20 you have less rubber and you are going to f--k up your rims if you have a 18 you will have more tire to cushion your rim on rocks I got 20's and i cringe wvery time I even rub my shit on the curb because i dont want metal to cement contact.

idaho, i was going back and forth on this topic too,

ive been hearing alot that 20s use up more gas and brake pads because its heavier, and the rim and tire are both more expensive...

i hear that if you tend to off road go with 18s due to the fact theres more tire to take the beating versus scratching the rims.

right now im looking into some aftermarket 18s with a 33" tire along with a 3 inch leveling kit or adjustable shocks...

so im like you i like the 20s, but i think for all around use go with an 18 with a nice all terrain tire or something.

hope this helps

i just bought 18's. i currently have a 3" level kit, but even if i had a 6" lift i would still get 18's. now i have the wheels, time to look into getting tires. thinking about toyo mt's.

Thanks Blaqk.

I have a guy wanting to trade me some Limited 20"s with an extra set of new cooper snow tires for my basically new 18" alloys. I like the look of the bigger tires, but am not sure if it is worth the sacrifice of lower fuel economy and offroad ability. I don't have a lift or leveling kit yet.

for your use, i would suggest 18s. as mentioned before, more rubber between the rim and the ground. however, i use my truck for about the same as you do. hunting, fishing, camping, hauling my atv around.... so by all means, im not all the road all the time either. but my 20s work for me just fine. i dont think id want to do any hard core off roading, bogging through mud pits, or rock crawling with them.....

i had to put a leveling kit in the front, which raised it up about 2.5 inches and costs anywhere from $100 -$250, depending on the brand. then i went with a beefy 33x12.5'' tire.

in all honesty, i love the way this looks, but i do miss the added rubber between me and the road. on my old truck, i had 18s with 33'' tires, and i wish i would have went that route with my tundra. im not too disappointed, but if i were to do it over again.......id go with 18s instead of 20s.

I like the look of 20's, I'm just afriad that if i go with 18's the wheel is going to look too small for my truck, especially if it isn't lifted. I would like to go with a 6" lift but It's just not in my budget this year, especially with me spending about 500/mo in gas. . I think I would like to cruise around and just enjoy the stock look/feel of the truck before I upgrade, especially since everytime i seem to upgrade something on my truck its like i get punished. I just upgraded the sound system with a pioneer AVIC D2, infinity 6020cs component speakers and the whole go around. Well my rear speakers blew out, and the AVIC D2 navigation unit doesn't work anymore. Everything worked perfect for about a week then it all went to shit. I'm having disk read errors on the AVIC D2 and trying to figure out a way to get new speakers out of infinity since i bought them on Ebay which nulls the warranty. I'm going to have to end up spending 125+ to fix the nav unit, 200 for anew pair of speakers + the time it takes for them to repair which = me riding around with no music, straight up dumb and dumber style...MOCK YEAH....ING YEAHHH....BIRD....

But Yeah someday I do want a 6" lift, new exhaust, K&N, 18" wheels, appropriate tires, brush gaurds, ohhh the options......wish my bank account was as big as my truck

I was just wondering, ballpark figure, how much a 6" lift 18" wheels and rubber is going to run? + installation costs I don't feel like messing around with this one. Start throwing out some figures lol
