18 vs 20 inch tires

My 4x4 Crew Max truck will come with 18 inch tires. Is there any advantages besides looks for going to a 20 inch tire? Do you lose any MPG with the bigger tire?

thanks

The bigger the tire the more gas you'll waste. The size of the rim shouldn't matter. Its the overall diameter of the wheel/tire that counts when it comes to gas milage. Oh yea, and the weight of the wheel/tires matters too. The heavier, the more gas you'll waste.

The tire with the optional 20 rim is shorter so the total wheel dia is the same, rim weight vs tire weight=small difference. Overall my mileage with 20's is no different than what is regularly being reported here.

A wider tire will lower the milage as well.

A narrower tire will get better mileage, less resistance on the road bro.

Yes they are! I got em but actually if I were to do it over again I would have stayed with 18's. The 20" wheels take away from the tire suspension for the type of offroading my truck is set up for. This is hard on the wheels, berings etc. Some day I may be switching back to 18's.

I put 22-inch wheels with 305/22 R45 tires. It is KILLING my fuel economy. The overall diameter is just a tad more (maybe) if not the same but the wider footprint is probably the culprit. I may swap the tires and go with a 285 to see if that helps. Just to be sure, we put the fatories back on and ran a couple tanks and saw an immediate and noticeable improvement. Conversely, when I put the big wheels back on it drops.

Where did you get that info? When I put 20's on my last truck I seemed to lose turning radius.

I was talking about high speed handling. Had 16s on a 3/4 ton 'burb and switched to 20s and it handled much better at speed. I don't know about turning radius, though. The double cab has a long wheel base to begin with, so it isn't going to parallel park like a Mini.
