tire pressure sensors

I was looking on ebay and found a few sets of tire sensors and was wondering if there is a difference in the sensors for the aluminum and steel wheels?

More than likely the wheel sensors are the same, they shouldnt mount any differently on an OEM steel wheel vs OEM Aluminum, However if you are mounting the sensors to aftermarket wheels be sure to see if the Valve stem hole is in the drop center of the wheel, if its not you may need adapters to mount the sensors properly in order to prevent the tire from damaging it during mounting. Its what I had to do on mine. We sell them at my shop since all vehicles built after Sept. 07 are ordered to have TPMS, and hardly any aftermarket wheels are made to accomodate them. IM me if I can help.

Discount Tire has the adapter package for adapting TPMS to alot of differnet wheel angles, the sales guy told me 5 bucks a kit. Beats the crap out of buying new sensors.

I am curious about changing over the sensors as well. I bought a crewmax with the steel wheels just because the rest of the truck was great. I want to get the 18" aluminum wheels, but want to stay with Toyota wheels/tires because my dealership threw in free oil changes, tire rotations, and lifetime tires when I purchased. I would just want to be able to swap over the TPM, but if some rigging had to be done to make them work I would be ok with that (especially if there were any pics of what had to be cut).

Ay oh woh! No cutting necessary bro, I believe if you swap 18" steel with 18" alloy the sensors will be the same.

the sensors for steel and aluminum wheels are different. it has to do with the angle that the sensor mounts in the wheel. I have the literature at home, but one of them is 20 degrees. Don't remember the other angle.

I remember seeing something about 2 different sensors.....1 being 20 degrees and the other being 40 degrees. By the way...how are these things mounted on the wheel?

they are held in place with a retaining nut. I think discount tire has adapters to use stock sensors in different wheels.

They are built into the valve stem.

If my sensors ever break or dont work on my new wheels, I'll stick to the old fashioned sensor.

I have an 07' and came with the styled steel wheels. Well a month went by and those wheels went by! I replaced them with the Moto Metal 956 18". After 50 miles the tp light went on and has not gone off since. I took it back to the tire shop and he brought out a handheld and told me that all 4 sensors were reading and it was toyota's problem. By the way the reset button does not do anything! So I went to Toyo to get the service done, explained everything to him and he immediatlly blammed the wheels. He would not touch it because the were nitrogen filled. He said to start with you have to make shure they are facing the same way and then get the numbers off the back. Has anyone ran into this?
