FAQ thread (wheels)

Okay,

I figured I'd start this out for most of those that are seeking new wheels for their 07+ Tundra.

1) The bolt pattern for the new Tundras (07-08) is 5x150mm (or sometimes referred to as "5 on 150").

The stock offset is 60mm. The stock offset moves the wheel further inward inside the wheel well.

most of the aftermarket wheels available feature a 30mm offset (roughly 1 inch) as opposed to the 60mm offset featured on the OEM wheels. This means that the wheel center will be 1" further out of the well. So, the same size tires would creep further to the outside of the wells. This gives the setup a more aggressive look. It also slightly alters the handling characteristics (now your truck is 2" wider from wheel to wheel) and helps to accomodate slightly wider tires.

Most of the wheel manufacturers haven't caught up with the new wheel spec's for the 07-08 Tundras, so you'll probably have to shop like crazy to find just the wheel you want.

A couple of manufacturers that I have found that DO have the new patterns are:

Moto Metal
Granite Alloy
Gear Alloy
Mickey Thompson
Dick Cepek

Your best bet is to do a search featuring "5x150" and "wheel" or "wheels" together.

After all my shopping and research, I decided to go with Moto Metal 951 (chrome) 20 inch wheels with Cooper LTZ 305/55R20s (which are on backorder) or possibly 275/60R20s. (The Cooper LTZ are the best value tire I could find providing decent looks, great price, low noise, good wear, good traction, etc). I'm using a 2" leveling kit to help ensure the 33" tires don't rub. Pictures coming soon.

The mods can certainly move it, but it wouldn't make sense. The title of his thread refers to the new section, so when this forum gets full of threads, people aren't going to open that thread unless they're looking for information on this new topic/section.

There should really be a thread that's titled "Wheels FAQ" or something of the sort. Prolly the same thing for tires.

New Wheels & Tires Section

New wheels and tire selection. Thats the title, self explanitory and has been working well so far. Everybody has gone there with there wheel/tire questions and help. With an attitude like that you will not find many people fond in any way of you.

Thanks for the info man. I'm a newb when it comes to trucks so this helps a lot. I found that on some wheel sites, they use the terms RWD and FWD or Negative / Posative when referring to the offset. What does that mean and what category does our truck fall into?

Wheel Tech - Offset

Wheel sizing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's a positive 60mm. The aftermarket rims are usually "less" than that (I've seen 45mm and most are 30mm).

As the rim gets wider and wider, the offset will adjust so that you push the rim further and further out, which tends to adversely effect the handling/turning, etc.

The stock setup can fairly easily handle an inch increase (18"x9" vs. the stock 18"x8") but anything beyond that begins to put different stresses on the stock suspension, so you have to adjust the suspension/steering/turning components.

Ok I admit I was wrong. Didnt realize dascrow made a whole new section. Thought it was just that thread. Good job fatty, my mistake.

Codiac-you've been good but you should have learned how to be a mod before becoming one.

My stock tires are 275/65/18 which means they're 32" diameter, 10.83" width on an 18" rim. i WAS going to get some 20" rims and have 33" tires, but I think the tires will look too thin on the 20" rims. I want the meaty-tire look so I think I'm going to have to stick with the 18" rims. Or do you guys think that with a 3" front and 1" back leveling kit I'd be able to fit 35" tires on 20" rims???

If you put a lift kit on, I think you'd be fine. The problem you'll run into is that you won't be able to fit that tire on anything less than a 10" wide wheel (safely) and 20x10"s is going to limit your availability even further. That, and the price of tires goes up exponentially as you get larger (which is a marketing cost, not an actual materials or delivery costs )

If you get a 3" lift and custom offset you should be able to run 35" tires without rubbing.

Hmm, good to know. I'm still weighing my options regarding a leveling kit or a 6" lift. The rims I want actually come in the 20x10" you recommend. Ultra has wheels for our trucks. You can go to their site and click on technical specs for each rim to see if they have the 5x150 bolt pattern. I was looking at the Ultra Goliath wheels.

I think a few people have the KMC monster wheels. And as far as tires go, you can surely fit 35" and 37" with some trimming to the skid plate and maybe a couple other parts.
