I am new to the forum but have been searching through it A LOT trying to figure out which tire size I should be looking into. So much of the information about largest size is jumbled around with the fact that most people seem to have aftermarket rims with varying widths and offsets. So I apologize in advance about another "can I..." tire size post but I'll make it as streamlined as possible. Disclaimer: I am quick at catching on but I am an absolute rookie with cars when compared to most of the helpful members here. So, here it goes...
I would like help in determining what is the largest tire size (width and diameter) for the following:
2013 Tundra CrewMax Rock Warrior
Wheel: Rock Warrior OEM 17"
Leveling Kit: 3/1
Spacer: Willing to add one if necessary (1.25" / 1.5" ?)
Trimming/Rubbing: Would prefer minimal trimming (like just the skid plate) and would like to keep the wheel well plastic and mud guards.
Current Tire: BFG AT T/A 285/70-17
Desired Tire Sizes:
305/65-17
295/70-17
315/70-17
Since I'm not sure how much the Spacers would add to the cost yet, I would appreciate a to know the largest size with or without the spacers.
Thank you very much in advance.
In case it matters, the tire options I am looking at at: BFG A/T T/A KO2 = Toyo Open Country M/T = Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ P3 = Nitto Ridge Grappler A/T. But I'm not hoping to turn this thread into a discussion of which tire is better. I can start another thread on that later.
Check out my build thread (link in sig). Also check out my thread "Not Leveled With 35s???" which is linked in my build thread. That should answer all your questions. If not, feel free to get clarifications.
DONE! Thank you! This is what I'm gonna go with. Gonna slap on the new Nitto Ridge Grapplers 35/12.5-17. A 3/1 Level and 1.5" Spacers (for looks and to better clear the UCA). Eventually I hope to get some rock sliders that I previously saw somebody in the forum was manufacturing. With that in place this should be a solid off-roading rig. Now if I can only find trails on the East Coast that fit vehicles longer and wider than just Jeeps.
I'm also gonna tag along with some of your ideas and mods if that's ok with you. I dig the red calipers and I have the same truck color as yours. I just won't be changing the suspension cause the Rock Warrior comes with pretty solid Billstein shocks already. And I can't really go any higher than a 3/1 so I can keep the truck accessible for the rest of the family.
My only remaining concern now would be how they would handle in off-roading trails. Particularly how the bigger tires, the minimized clearance, and the spacers (pushing the tire outside of the fender) would affect the articulation.
I'm running the toyo open country MT LT285/75R17 (34X11.50R17) on a 2011 RW with your same set up. I have 1.25" spacer on now but you don't need them. Just put them on for looks. Lots of guys on here have 35x12.5" on their RW's without any major trimming or body mount mods.
^^^ Good points! I was just reading a thread about going with 37's which got me thinking about what you mentioned regarding the spacers. Maybe I'll leave the spacers for a later time, see how the truck looks with just the 35's first. No need to get too ahead of myself especially with a mod that is so simple to apply at any later time. Did you end up putting spacers on yours?
And for the level kit I will be using the LRT 3/1. CNC Machined and step by step instructions for install. And good price. Can always upgrade later if they don't work out.
FWIW. You can use a spacer lift, or you can have a solid off-roading rig, but you can't have both, at least not at the same time. Consider the 5100's as an alternative, with maybe a couple of Couchbuilder shims on top of the shock towers if you need a full 3" of lift in the front.
Either way, don't forget the diff drop kit to correct your CV angles.
Yeah that's what I figured. If I lived out west where there are plenty of wide trails for this beast of a truck I would probably be looking for an all out rig. But being in Northern VA I only get to take it off road a handful of times per year. That plus this is our Daily Driver and our only vehicle. Maybe once kids are bigger and wife loosens the leash I may be able to take it out more often. But with light duty off-roading I think the spacer lift will do well for now. And at $350 it's not too huge an investment in case I need an upgrade later.
I had 315/70r17 Hankook Dynapro MTs and 1.25 Wheel spacers on my RW. I needed a body mount chop done and fender liner pushed forward to not rub.
You could most likely get away with out doing any of the chop/ fender mod if you didn't install Wheel spacers. But they do give the truck a nice stance.
Thanks for the info. Those tires are basically a 35x12.5 so your set up would be same as mine except mine are the RW rims, don't know what the difference would be in offset. But since Jaj's ride can fit the tire flush with no cutting I'm thinking it smarter to start there and then consider getting spacers later for the stance.
3/2 LRO level with 285/75/17 Terra Grapplers and 1.5" spacers. No trimming. Only rubs on driver side when full turn in reverse. This can be trimmed easily, just haven't gotten to it.
YEAH! That's what I'm talking about. The tires pushed out like that just a little bit looks awesome. I'm digging that and want to do it, but trying to be practical too. If I never took it off road I wouldn't worry much about it, but I'm concerned about things going wrong while out on the trail. And yours are probably good cause they're an inch less in diameter and an inch less in width. Both of those inches put together would probably change the outcome quite a bit.

Just put 35's x12.5 on my 17" rock warrior wheels the other day. Bfg ko2's. Second from top bilstein 6112. Rubs a bit in away bar at full lock. No spacers.

Rubbing the skid plate maybe? I had to chop/bend a good piece of mine. All I have left is to drill a new hole on the front wheel well cover do I can push it half an inch further forward and that'll eliminate any and all running. Right now it only rubs on reverse.
