Although Im about to purchase a set of new tires, I was hoping to try to sell the stock TRD Michelin's (LTX AT2). Doesnt look like I can now. Just had my 20k oil change (5k interval FF + rotation), and according to the dealer, my tread went from 6/32 to 4/32 which is about 25% left give or take. Iv only had the truck a little over a year.
Why does new vehicle tires wear so much faster than purchasing them separately? I was told that they use a different/softer compound so when people test drive the new vehicles, it will feel smoother. Is that really true?
I just took the Michelins off my '14. I don't know their current depth, but I believe I heard or read that these tires were pretty shallow to begin with...like 10-12 32nds. I had a little over 16000 miles on mine, and I'm guessing I could have gotten another 30k or so out of them. They seem like really good tires.
Seems to me that OEM tires are like the ink cartridges that come with a new printer. They never last as long as the replacements, and I'll never be convinced that is not by design. Even most leased cars end up with a new set of tires on them before the car gets turned in at 36-40k miles.
My Bridgestones only lasted 27,000 thousand. My theory is the use softer compound tires to increase the ride quality on new vehicles and they wear faster. Don't know for sure, just my thoughts. Had the same issue on a Camry my wife had.
It wouldn't surprise me learning that tire manufacturers change their composition based on the retail outlet they sell to.
This happens with paint Glidden sells through Home Depot.
For the last 12 years I've purchase all my tires from Tirerack if for no other reason they don't sell old tires. I have had LTX Michelins from Tirerack last so many miles they get hard but the tread looks good. I had over 60,000 miles on them and still passed inspection on my Titan truck!
Also country of origin may play a roll. It seemed to me and my friends that Michelin tires stamped made in France lasted the longest.
