18" alloy wheels different in 2012

Just picked up my 2012 tundra today traded in identical 2010 tundra SR5 double cab. I compared side by side the new 2012 18" alloy wheels and the 2010 18" alloy wheels on my traded in truck is the same design, but the old 2010 18" alloy wheels is definitely brighter appearing more shiney and stands out more than the new 2012 18" alloy wheels they got on new tundras almost a dull gray color but definitely alloy wheels, not the cheap steel wheels. Anybody else notice this? Nothing I can do about it now, but in the future, I sure will not be spending 810 bucks on 18" alloy wheels and instead either go aftermarket or get the chrome appearance package at around 450 bucks that includes chromed rims, exhaust tip, outside mirrors on back, and driver's door handle on DC tundras. That would look awesome/extremely sharp on my 2012 nautical blue tundra I think but not willing to sacrifice 810 bucks now that I spent it already on the 18" alloy wheels unless someone on here is willing to give me like 700 bucks for 1 day old rims under 100 miles -

No, both my former 2010 and new 2012 tundra both codes on window sticker state code AA - 18" alloy wheels and no, they are alloy and not painted on the 2012 tundra I have now, just they seem to be dull and boring and not polished/shiny.

Interesting though, window sticker in 2010 the price was 1020 and now in 2012 the price is 910, so maybe the mfg. cut costs by 110 bucks and did NOT polish them to make them appear shinier. Time to get out the buffing wheel and shine them up I suppose. Wouldn't that work. I know it works great on aluminum rims on my cycle and isn't alloy wheels mean aluminum or is it not aluminum and some type of metal?

Either way, the 2012 18" alloy rims sure suck as compared to my 2010 tundra being much brighter and sharper looking, but they are the exact same design, just the 2012's are totally dull looking. This bites-never noticed that when I took delivery yesterday. Yet another cost cutting measure I suppose just like I just noticed now the 2010 tundra had a plastic foot pad in the upper left corner of the drivers floor to rest your foot on and in 2012 my new truck does not have that and just has the carpet. Boy, that upper left spot of the carpeted floor where I rest my foot is surely going to be toast in 1 year since my floor mats cover everything but that raised corner piece.

sorry, not driving 50 miles back to the dealer out of my way just to snap pics of my 2010 tundra rims. You are just going to have to take my word for it because it is true. My wife actually noticed the difference right away since I assumed they would be the same, they are not. Anyone know if the 18" alloy wheels can be buffed shinier like my former 2010 tundra 18" alloy wheels to make them not dull looking like they are now? There has to be a reason the mfg. of those alloy wheels went down in price 110 bucks and I bet they did not polish them in 2012 vs. 2010 - cheap cost cutting if you ask me.

Maybe they did something to them to keep them from looking like crap after a couple years?? Probably not, but it would be nice.

How about pictures of the new rims? I'm just trying to figure out WHICH alloys you are talking about.

Maybe these?

Be advised that the wheels that come with the "chrome appearance" package are actually the standard 18" Steel Wheels with a plastic wheel cover glued on. The wheel cover has a plastic, chrome like finish. Also be advised that these wheel covers do not just pop off. At least mine do not.

If by chance you are interested in a set of the mirrors with the chrome covers send me a PM. I installed towing mirrors and have the original set from the chrome appearance package which are in fantastic shape.

I know the difference between steel wheels and alloys. yes they do paint alloy wheels. But without a pic of your new wheels, we don't know which ones you are talking about.
The TRD are polished and they have a coating on them. So buffing will have limited results.

I was at the dealer and I noticed that the styled steel wheels on the 12's appear duller, maybe a new paint formula or less flakes. So maybe it is the same with whatever alloys you have.

Here's a pic of a 2012, and it does appear these wheels are now painted silver rather than cleared aluminum.

If they are painted, get some paint stripper and strip them. Then get to work buffing them. I made two sets of S-10 rims look like chrome, everyone wanted to know where i got them chromed.....
