HID Opinions...?

Alright guys, after lookin at my girls tc today, (shes has em) I have decided I can't wait any longer and I need my HID's ASAP! So what color do you think would look best on my SW CrewMax Limited? I was thinking white (5000k) would look best but I was also considering 6000k which has a hint of blue... I just wanted to get some other opinions, before I make my final decision.... thanks, oh yeah by the way I live in CA, where HID's are illegal period unless OEM, but you can usually get away with yellow or white... Thanks!

It will work, but you'll need to fab some projector housings if you want a proper light pattern. Otherwise, you'll just be spraying a lot of random light since the reflectors on the Tundra aren't designed for HID.

Lots of better, legal options out there. Do a search and you'll find quite a few threads on the subject.

You can do whatever you want to your trucks. I'm not trying to harp on anyone's mods. I'm all for custom everything on the truck. I just thought I'd offer up info I have learned while looking into some of the lights. Maybe this will help people learn about the mods before they spend the money and possibly get in trouble for them later.

If the bulb is painted blue to get a color temperature, you really don't want them. It's like a tint on your window; all the light is not getting through so they won't be as bright as a normal bulb. Some states consider them illegal and you could get a ticket for them. You want a bulb that burns at those temperatures, not one that filters out all the other temperatures with a colored film.

If the HID bulbs are used in your factory reflectors, then they are illegal in the US. The stock halogen reflectors are designed for halogen bulbs. The HIDs are a different shape and therefore produce a different light pattern. You can blind oncoming traffic with those lights. Those eBay kits are almost always illegal to import into and illegal to use in the US. And anything that says "DOT approved" is not considered legal. The DOT does not approve anything. Anyone can stamp those words on their lights if part of them meet the DOT guidelines. To be legal in the US, the lights have to be legal according to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108. If you get a ticket for the lights, that is what could get you out of the ticket because really, any alterations to the headlights is considered illegal. Currently, there are no HID conversion kits that are FMVSS No. 108 compliant.

The only way that I have found that you can be FMVSS No. 108 compliant is to take HID lights (bulbs and lens) from an existing car's headlights assembly (like a Lexus or BMW or whatever) and remove the bulbs, lens and ballasts and rebuild those to fit in the Tundra headlight assemblies. Those bulbs and lenses are already FMVSS No. 108 compliant so they could be considered legal to use. You can usually buy those headlight assemblies for other cars for around $150 or so. You can find a lot of info at HIDPlanet.com if you are looking for more info.

Go w/ a 6k kit. spend the extra money and buy a quality kit. Philips had a great kit, not sure if they still sell em. 8k or 10k gets a bit cheesy cuz of the color.

I've used some known brand kits like McCulloch and Philips for like $279 and I had problems wiht flickering lights after about a 6 mos period. These lights are more affordable and the burn color is identical. In fact I have McCulloch on my R1 and GSXR sporbikes and you cant even tell the difference when the 2 are side-by-side.
