Re-program factory stereo to VIN

I'm looking at purchasing a factory JBL 6-disc changer for my 08 tundra crew max. The seller pulled it from the same vehicle to install an aftermarket. The seller states that the stereo my have to be re-programmed to my specific vin number. Is anyone familiar with this process? I want to make sure this stereo will work befor I fork over the ducketts. Thanks in advance.

I'de think they would all be interchangeable. Have you tried calling a dealer? How much it the guy asking for the unit?

That is done to help prevent a stolen radio to be used in a different vehicle.

This is a common feature on most OEM stereo systems for the last decade or so. A dealer can help you reprogram the radio for your truck if you can prove it wasn't stolen.

Yup. Heard about this. You need to provide a bill of sale from the seller with the name, address, and phone number of the seller which the dealer can contact in order to prove the deck is not stolen. This is how i was told about it anyway...

Yeah pretty sketchy. The guy maybe legit but if you can't get in going you're out the $$$$. Save the headaches and get a good aftermarket deck.

Not unless you have a TechStream computer.... which would be rare.
