iPod adapter

I have an 08 Tundra with the factory JBL system. I prefer not to use the Aux adapter for my iPod for obvious reasons (sound quality, exposed cable, etc.). I understand there are cable adapters that connect to the back of the head unit that I can run to my glove box to hook up my iPod. I want to be able to use my head unit's touch screen to scroll through and select music. I've done some research but have found very few answers. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

IPOD adapter

Scosche makes an adapter to tie in behind the radio so you can use the radio buttons to control the ipod (it charges it also). I just purchased an 08 with the JBL system and was planning on having the xm added by the dealer. They had another ipod adapter that would not work with the xm, I was told it had to be xm or the ipod adapter, but not both. The scosche unit (part # AXIPTA) it supposed to work with the xm installed. It intalls somewhere between the two. It looks like it's all plugs and harnesses, no cutting into existing wiring. Crutchfield.com sells the unit for about $175 I believe. Once the xm is installed, the wiring tie in is supposed to be behind the glove box.

Thanks for the heads up jcm. I'll check into it. I do have XM installed so I would need something that works with it. The part you're talking about sounds like it's exactly what I'm looking for.

It's a great option, I have a pioneer 7" touch screen with the Ipod module, the satellite radio module, Blue tooth module, and the Nav module. I can even play videos from my ipods. The modules are expensive though, but in my opinion it's worth it. Good luck!

Scosche IPOD interface did not work on my 08

Just to follow up, my local dealer installed the factory XM last week and I attmepted to install the Scosche unit over the weekend with no luck. The unit came with 2 harnesses, one for a direct tie in to the stereo without XM and the other to tie into the XM unit directly. With the proper harness installed, all I could get was the song information but no music. In addition, it would not allow me to switch back to XM. I called the 1 800 noo help line and someone tried to help, but said he had to talk with an engineer on Monday and that he would get back to me. He also mentioned they had not tried it on an 08, not sure what the difference would be.

An afterthought, my ipod is the newer Nano video. Perhaps, this IPOD version was not tested?

If anyone has successfully installed the Scosche unit or any other that works with XM, I'd like to hear about it......

Thanks,

jcm

jcm, thanks for the heads up. I would think that all ipods should work, but who knows? Please keep us updated on your issue. I'm still looking into getting the Schosche unit as well.

And update on the Scosche unit? I'm trying to decide between the DICE and Scosche iPod adapters for my JBL/XM setup.

Tex, I won't be able to install my ipod adapter until I get back in the states. I haven't done any research on the DICE unit. I'll have to check that one out. If you decide on one can you please let us know how it works out for you?

I installed the factory XM and the scoshe ipod adapters under the driver seat this weekend. I have JBL with nav touchscreen. Here's my observations with my iphone.

The biggest and most inconvenient feature is that you can't skip songs or do anything with the ipod via the steering wheel controls. ARRRGHH! I guess you would need an adapter that shows up as a CD changer for that. This one piggy backs through SAT mode. (just to be clear... i haven't lost functionality. the steering controls still work in other modes)

The manual is kind of limited in respect to showing all of the features, but it's easy to use if you play around with it.

When I initially hooked it up and turned it on the ipod sounded really distorted like the level to radio was to hot. The manual says not to hook up ipod till initialization is complete, but there's no explanation to this or how you know it's complete. Well it must have re-initialized by the next time i hooked it up, because it sounds fine now.

When browsing the ipod, you are supposed to use the SCAN button, but if you mistakenly push the SEEK button next to it, the song fast forwards till it reaches the next song and I haven't figured a way to cancel the operation. Doesn't mention this button anywhere in the manual and it's kind of annoying.

Another thing I don't like is that the iPod menu shows up exactly the same on every SAT mode (SAT 1, SAT 2, and SAT 3). This is annoying because you lose preset # 6 on every SAT mode. This becomes the button that switches you to your iPod.

These are my initial observations, but I'm still playing with it and getting used to it. Both are convenient and were easy to install, but I really really miss the steering control. That was the whole reason i bought it and I feel like I haven't gained anything compared to using my iphone through the aux. The only difference now is I have to touch the radio instead of my iphone.

Hey guys,

I have the Toyota factory iPod interface as well as the Sirius option. Both were installed at my local dealership, and both are working with out any problems. (I am using the iPod touch) All of the factory control work on this option, even the steering wheels controls. My only problem with the system is that I can't see what song is playing on the Nav screen. Perhaps that can be fixed, I have just been lazy to this point.

I may be wrong, but I seem to recall that the factory ipod adapter works only with Sirius. If you have XM, it has to be one or the other, but not both.

I was unaware there was a factory ipod adapter. loot, I'm curious if you can get the song title to display on the Nav screen. That would be nice to have. I would like to have my steering wheel controls available for the ipod too.

add: I have XM as well. I'm curious if the factory ipod adapter is compatible.
