oh yeah, when I purchase my tundra DC, the stealership wanted $650.00 for the alarm. I told them I will pass because I plan to get an aftermarket alarm with all the bells and whistles anyway. They usually tries to sell this alarm package to you when you are in the finance office.

Hey, everyone. I did my research after reading several posts in this thread. This is definitely a strange one for the books.

Yes, it is true. It seems that all the Tundras do have the alarm, but unless the alarm is listed on the Monroney label, then the alarm is not activated.

No, this doesn't appear to be a conspiracy. The Toyota tech trainers are not aware of this and therefore the dealerships are not aware of this either.

Let me explain this a little. There are two kinds of options on Toyota vehicles. Factory installed options and port installed options. The port can either mean an actual shipping port or the railhead. There isn't anything in Toyotaland as a dealer activated option.

Having said that, I can tell you a few things that the Techstream can adjust on all Tundras. It can activate the alarm system and activate the glass break sensor once it is installed. It can also manipulate the seat belt alarm options and the remote locking options. I think it can also adjust some lighting options like the dome light timing.

There are other options, but those would be specific to installed options. The main problem with the Techstream is that it isn’t smart enough to only list the options for the installed components.

Hope I didn’t muddy the water too much.

IF you meet all the above you have the OEM alarm.
FJ Cruisers do not APPLY!

I set out with a plan and a story.

I wanted to make sure my Immobilizer was working, because it was acting weird (not true but hey). Hey while your there could you RE-activate my alarm, it has stopped working.

I went the Cerritos Toyota, they know what I was talking about, but wanted $95. I'm not going to pay for something of such nature as this. It should be free!

Went to Norwalk Toyota, same story. Tech checked my blinking light on the dash told me my Immobilizer is working,

This is the conversation :

me : Umm yes I need you to check to make sure my Immobilizer is working properly.

tech : Sure no problem, can I have your keys?

me : sure! here you go sir.

tech : -lock the doors, looks @ blinking light on dash- Well its working.

me : great could you reactivate my alarm it hasn't been working.

tech : Your alarm ?

me : YES my alarm, a tech told me to disconnect my battery to reset my ECU so that it would accept the key when I was having problems with the immobilizer, ever sense then my alarm doesn't work.

tech : -with a dumb face- Alarm huh, let me call the dealer you bought your truck from. Give me a minute.....

tech : Dealer told me to look for a LED and a brain box. -so he looks- I can't find anything. Are you sure you have an alarm?

me : YES I'm positive! IT was working before! The dealer never installed a LED or a brain box so your looking for something that isn't there.

tech : well if their is no LED then their is no alarm.

me : well sir, every 07-08 Tundra with Keyless 5.7v8 has an alarm from the factory, just needs to be activated, which is done to all Limited Tundras

tech : Umm I don't think so, we would have gotten a bulliten about it, I mean we're Toyota we should know.

tech : -calls more experienced tech- have you ever heard of an alarm installed OEM that needs to be activated ?

2nd tech : Nope, I have been working on cars for 20+ years, you have no clue what your talking about sir, you have no alarm.

me : well how about some hard proof then ? I'll be back in 20.

So I go home pick up my laptop to show some TechStream instructions.

me : well i'm back and look at this - I show him my laptop-.

tech : wow! I've never seen this before, I guess your right.

me : well lets call on that other guy, he needs to see this too.

tech : -pages other guy-

2nd tech : So your back, with proof?

me : Just take a look @ this, do you read the instructions, what do they read ?

2nd tech : they tell you have to activate and or calibrate options in your truck no big deal.

me : well what about the alarm.

2nd tech : SIR! you have no alarm!

me : OK! Where is your GM.

GM walks in.........

GM : Whats seems to be the problem ?

2nd tech : Have you EVER! heard about an alarm being installed in a car and not being "activated"?

GM : Nope, it doesn't make sense, not possible!

me : well it might be stupid, might sound crazy, but it IS true.

GM : -in a sarcastic voice- well if thats the case I have a FJ cruiser and I'm activating mine.

2nd tech : -sarcastic voice- Yeah i'll do the same to my Camry.

- every one laughs, at this point I have an audience of techs -

me : Ok so i'm crazy and know nothing correct ?

Every one says no, no, no. You just don't have an alarm.

me: Well here is your chance to prove me wrong and your self right, go grab your Techstream.

2nd tech : Hmmm. walks away upset.

- now every one is @ my truck opening doors, my hood. asking questions. My truck is surrounded by techs, Mr. big tech guy walks out with this Techstream-

me : I'll stand back, do what you need to do. Just make sure you activate my alarm.

- a few mins pass, techs are hovering over the Techstream.-

2nd tech : Well I'll be Damned!

me : excuse me?

2nd tech : Every one close the doors......

beep beep, doors lock,

2nd tech : hmm the light is staying on, interesting.

-30 seconds later..... honk honk honk honk honk, lights flashing everyone just dumbfounded-

2nd tech : ****** **** **** ****

me : What! I can't hear you over my Alarm! - laughs-

2nd tech : this is crazy, I apologize, you were right.

GM : Go grab my FJ.

2nd tech : Yeah wheres my Camry.

-well I couldn't laugh harder when I told them, "well you don't have an alarm, its not going to work don't even try", they figured I was being sarcastic. They tried, it didn't work, They washed my Tundra I drove away with a smirk on my face and my pockets full and all their noses pointing down.
This morning I dropped my Tundra off at the dealer I bought it from to get my deck rails and bed liner put in since they had to order it. I asked the service guy if he could have one of the techs activate the alarm that comes on my Tundra, he said that there isnt one on there. You have to have a sticker on the passenger rear glass that says Toyota Alarm.
I went back and forth about it (I forgot to bring my .pdf on activating the alarm but I have a feeling that he wont be activating the alarm.
I should fax him the paper but its freaking 24 pages!

Well got a call from the dealer that I bought the Tundra from and after faxing the paper work and listening to the service adviser rambling on about the Tundra's not having a alarm system in place and that I need to call Toyota directly and have them call the Toyota dealer and notify them that this work can be completed.

He said that I had to buy the GBS system that costs $325 which includes installation. I told him that the GBS is not a system but a add on. I actually got fed up with this crap and told him that I am too busy to be dealing with little crap like this.

I am not happy with my dealer in which I have bought 3 vehicles from in the past 8 years.

Dude, that is crap. Call this number, (800) 331-4331. It is Toyota's Customer Experience Center. Open a complaint ticket with them. Hope this will finally resolve your issues. If they give you crap, then tell the Toyota Customer Service Rep to have one of their Tech Trainers to hook a Techstream up to a Tundra. Make sure they understand that the GBS system is a separate menu from the horn alarm system.

If you could PM the name of the service adviser and his phone number I could have my dense service adviser call him and get the lowdown on what to do.
The excuses he gave even after I faxed him the instructions that Toyota published and he still said that there was no factory alarm system in place.
It takes a few seconds to slide the Techstream over to the vehicle and see if I was saying is true or not.

A smart service man would look into it and if it was found to be true use that as a added bonus to sell more of their cars.
But they had to play the "I dont know" card.
Well crap you have my vehicle in front of you and service techs standing around, why not check?

I picked up my DC 4.7L exactly 2 weeks ago and got the phone call from the dealership tonight asking if I was happy with my sales agent and purchase. They let me know my survey would be coming shortly and asked if there were any issues with my truck. Naturally, because of this great thread, I told them that I'd like to bring my truck by to activate the OEM alarm that it came with. I told them it'd take 5 minutes to activate it and that I have the instructions, but he said he needed to check into it with the technicians and he'd call me back tomorrow. We'll see.....................................I hope you guys are right about all Tundras having them (minus the 6 cylinder)!

Here is the e-mail response that I received regarding the factory alarm system that we have but not activated:

_________________________________________________

Dear Mr. XXXX:

We are sorry if our previous response was not clear.

The VIP RS3200 plus is not standard on the vehicle and not already installed nor is the glass breakage sensor. You must purchase the VIP RS3200 plus alarm system separately. The glass breakage system is a function of the VIP alarm system. In order to have the glass breakage sensor, you must purchase and install the VIP alarm system . There is no alarm system currently installed on your vehicle from the factory.

If you would like us to contact the dealership Customer Relations Manager to address your concern with the service you received, please contact us with your phone number so we may do so. Please note; the dealership did advise you correctly regarding the alarm option on your vehicle.

If you require further clarification, please contact us by calling 800-331-4331. We are available from 5am to 6pm, Pacific Time, Monday through Friday and from 7am to 4pm on Saturday.

Sincerely,
Anita Mouton

So basically they are saying that our Tundra's with the immobilizer/remote lock & unlock does not have a alarm system in place and we must purchase the VIP RS3200 unit along with the glass breakage sensor.

What a crock!
