Stupid question, but I need an answer

Hey all,
I am new to my 2000 Tundra 4X4 TRD with a 4.7L
Here is my uniformed question, is this truck a 1/2 ton or a 3/4 ton.... I am thinking it is a 1/2 ton but would like some help here,

I have a 1973 Wells cargo trailer that is 18' long and only has a single axle under it. It is mostly used as a camper trailer that used to get pulled around by my 1 ton GMC. This is not a 'lawn mower' type trailer this is a 1973 Wells Cargo camper type trailer. Heavy American made unit. But it can't be too heavy because like I stated before it only has 1 axle. I also pulled it behind my dad's 1979 Chevy BIG 10 with only some whipping problems now and then.
I have a tongue leveling set up I will use,(not sure what it is really called but it has bars and chains to level out the bumper and the tongue of the trailer.
Thanks for any help in advance, Columbia,SC

The drivers door jam will tell you what you can haul

I just found this

Toyota Tundra 4x4 SR5 Limited Access Cab Pickup (2000)

I read that this truck can haul 7,100 pounds, but does that make it a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton? I am sure (pretty sure) that the trailer I need to pull to the fair (only 12 miles away) is a doable deal. I have a load leveling setup with bars and chains to help out. I would like any input other Tundra owners can give me.

What about the overdrive, should I turn it off? I did that (turned it off) last weekend while pulling the 2 horse trailer..... Probably 3,000 pounds, I got about 10 mpg at 55 mph. The terrain was slightly hilly (long slow hills and valleys). I do not want to hurt the tranny just to save a few MPG.
Any ideas are welcome!
Thanks again, Columbia,SC

Its not a 3/4, that much i know for sure. The new tundras i belive are considered a heavy half ton. the first gens are smaller.

Keep in mind too that towing capacity does not necessarily determine if it is a 1/2 or 3/4 ton. That is actually the payload capacity (what you can put in the bed). Usually a 3/4 ton truck is rated to pull more than a 1/2 ton though.

OK , here is a summary form here First Drive: 2000 Toyota Tundra Pickup Truck

Performance figures for the Tundra are impressive. V8-equipped Tundras have a 2,000-pound payload rating and can tow 5,000 pounds right out of the box. Buy the optional towing package, and the Tundra is capable of dragging 7,000 pounds of stuff wherever you need it to go.

I don't know have you could even think a 2000 tundra is a 3/4 ton truck if so you would see more of them would you not ! But I can understand how that mistake can be made sense the tundra is so strong.

There must have been a typo in that report from Edmunds because if the truck had a 2,000lb payload capacity....that would make it a 1 ton truck (AKA F350 or Silverado3500). I don't think that is the case. Also, on my brand new 08 with the 5.7, the payload is "only" 1,605lbs. I guess that since the manufacturers get bragging rights for how much their truck can tow/haul....that the 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton classifications arent really true anymore.

I thought 2nd gen was a light 3/4 ton

There is a whole thread about this in "Is the Tundra closer to a F150 or F250"

I have a 02’ and I don’t think you will have any problems pulling that trailer. I pulled a 2000’ Dodge Dakota V8 ext cab 4x4 out of the mud from about 100 yards away. He was driving through a farmer’s field and came across an underground spring and sank it down into the frame. We got my truck on solid ground, hooked up a ton of chains to reach him and I yanked him out without any problems all the way through the field onto the road.

What makes this story so special is that I did it in from of a bunch of Ford heads. They gave me a ton of shit for driving a Japanese truck, and told me they had a six wheel wrecker on its way and not to bother trying. Needless to say I shut them up and drove away with the biggest smile ever and yet one more reason not to buy a Ford. Love my truck! Oh yeah they called the tow truck driver and told him to turn around and go home lol.

I can only assume that pulling dead weight through the mud like that with all those chains has to count for something. Not sure how to rate the weight I pulled, but am sure it wasn’t light. Hope this was some encouragement !

sorry so long to get back to you all that replied.
I towed the Wells Cargo over here to the house, it is a single axle and it was a teeter totter rider all the way home. I have a trailer leveler that goes on the tounge and I think I need to to tighten it up a few links on the chains to stabalize the load. I had plenty of power and NO whip at all. I could tell that this is a much heavier trailer than a 2 horse trailer loaded! The horse trailer is as follows,
2- 1,000lbs horses and a all steel built 2 horse trailer. 3500 pounds at least.
Thanks again and forgive me if I am slow to respond.
Kids, wife, horses, dogs, cats, chickens ect. all need me right now!~
