Towing before 800 miles

Has anyone done it? The owner's manual says 800 miles. I have a small trailer to fill with rock this weekend and I only have 500 miles on the odometer. The tranny and motor should be solid now, right? Any idea why 800 miles for towing?

I towed my boat from storage last yr. w/ about 500 miles on the Tundra. 23ft 5K lbs, about 60 miles and didn't have any problems. Over a yr now and 10K+ miles....still no problems. Just be sensible and I wouldn't worry about it. Use the tow/haul mode.

Thanks. That helps alot. I only plan on pulling 2 ton of rocks about 10 miles. I'll take it easy.

Everything went OK. Truck didn't appear to notice that it was hooked to a trailer.

The main thing is heat cycles on the driveline. If you have run the truck up to temp and let it cool several times, you should be fine. What you want is the metal parts to expand and fit together correctly before you put a load on it. In 500mi, you should have at least a dozen heat cycles by now which is great.

Plus, you want to tow early on in the engine break-in to seat the piston rings so I would say it is a great idea to pull the trailer. The big thing would be not to run the engine to redline. Also, use the select-shift and downshift when slowing down to put more pressure on the piston rings to help break-in.

When you seat the piston rings well, it forms a tighter seal against the cylinder wall so you get better compression. Tons on info about this if you search this website or Google:Engine break-in. I rebuild engines as a hobby. I would imagine the owner's manual suggests 800mi to group everyone together but engine builders break their motors in on a dyno under a load after a certain number of heat cycles.

Enjoy showin off the new rig!
