Prodigy Brake controller blows 15amp tail lamp fuse ?

I took the prodigy controller from my 2005 Tundra and plugged it into my 2008 Tundra. It now blows the 15amp tail light fuse. I replaced the 15amp fuse with a 30amp and it does not blow. Any one else have this issue ? Am I at risk by using a higher amp fuse ?

P.S. Toyota service wants $84.00 p/hr to diagnose this issue !

Just my opinion, but putting in a bigger fuse may be just asking for trouble. You could burn up some wiring, which could start an electrical fire; or the electric brakes on whatever you're towing might not work when you need them the most (i.e., when the Prodigy is putting out max current during a panic stop).

I would think that if you are plugged into the Tundra's prewired brake control connector this should be covered under warranty (unless your Prodigy is defective).

Also, it seems really odd that that the brake controller would be wired into a tail light circuit, though I am totally unfamiliar with Toyota wiring schematics. I know that if one was wiring the Prodigy from scratch, you are supposed to wire it directly to the battery using a circuit breaker, to insure you have a reliable connection. So, it's hard to imagine why Toyota would piggyback this onto a tail light circuit.

I am also moving my Prodigy from Hal (a 1978 Chevy 454 CC) to a new Tundra in a few weeks, so keep us posted on what you find out.

Good luck...

I found out that the 15amp fuse only blows when you plug the pigtail connector in. Leave all power off, pigtail plugged, then put the 15amp
fuse back in and everything works.

Now the problem is that the parking lights no longer flash when you use the remote to lock / unlock the Tundra.

You've got a problem if you're blowing at 15 amp fuse with your controller. I've got the same brake controller and it wired into the factory harness no problem and no blown fuses. By putting in a 30 amp fuse you're running the risk of setting fire to your entire wiring harness and most likely your truck. You might also be heading down the road with whatever you're towing and suddenly find you don't have any trailer brakes.

I strongly suggest you find the problem and put back the 15 amp fuse. The fuse blowing is telling you you've got a load problem or short somewhere.

You should have received a small trailer plug and wiring harness with your truck. This hooks up one-to-one with your brake controller and plugs directly into a female plug located under the driver's side kick panel. If you didn't get one go ask the dealer for one.
