Tundra/Fifthwheel Trailer Pics
Does anyone have any pics of their Tundra towing a fifthwheel trailer? I am looking at buying a new trailer for my Tundra, want to know how it looks like with a fifthwheel trailer behind it.

Tundra/5th wheel pics
Here is a pic of my Tundra hooked to my 24' Layton 5th wheel (camera phone pic, sorry). I pulled it up on the driveway to adjust the bed/5th wheel space. In the picture it is too close, but the trailer is level. With proper clearance the trailer isn't level.
If you are considering getting a 5th wheel, I'd stay with one this size or smaller. ***If you're considering getting a Tundra to pull a 5th wheel, I'd move on!!! In my experience this is NOT a good set up!!!*** |

Well, for starters, it is a 1/2 ton. Actually, it is a 1/2 ton minus!!! Your can DEFINITELY feel it when you tow. (To all those that are going to slam me for saying that, and then quote Toyota's "claim" that this truck can tow more than any other 1/2 ton, I say, YOU ARE A VICTIM OF MARKETING HYPE! I've been towing for a living for 30 years, so I have some experience.)
Suspension required some serious upgrading. The bed walls are too high for a 5th wheel. The frame is too thin. I wasn't comfortable bolting in my rail mounts, so I welded them for more strength. GVWR is too low. Pin weights + passenger(s) + cargo = way over GVWR. I towed this same set up with a Dodge 1500 Hemi, and a Chevy 1500HD and they would have kicked this Toyota's butt in ALL regards but a slight power disadvantage. |

I have a 1998 Terry fifth wheel that I bought used last spring. It is 24' in length with a small slide out. I do not know the exact weight. I have had the opposite experience. My DC 5.7 4x4 was a perfect match for my fifth wheel. I pulled a fifth wheel with one of my 1/2 ton chevy trucks before and was not pleased with how it pulled. My Tundra handled the fifth wheel with ease and the extra power was a huge benefit. I also averaged 11.6 mpg on a 2500 mile trip with some mountain driving. One thing is that there is a special bracket used under the bed for installing the fifth wheel hitch which should eliminate any need for welding, and actually moves the hitch up so that the center of the hitch is about 3" forward of the center of the axel which gives better weight disribution and thus better handling. This did not cause a problem for turn clearance for me which was my biggest concern. I do have the slide style hitch if needed, but did not have to use it. Another thing to consider, as I am sure you know, is that not all fifth-wheels or trailers pull as the same. I pulled my daughter's trailer a couple years back for about 1200 miles. I kindly suggested after that trip that they get rid of it, which they did and have a much better set-up now.

I ended up buying my Tundra off my father because he bought it to pull a fifth wheel. With the sales people saying it would tow it, plus they say it will pull 13000 pounds (is this correct)? Plus there is no reviews on towing a fifth wheel that he could find. Anyways, after he bought it and did a little more research he dedcided he didn't feel comfortable pulling the fifth wheel. He didn't want to strain the engine or transmission too much. So i bought it off him and he purchased a Chevy Duramax with the allison tranny.
It worked out for me, I got a Tundra. |

This conversation is irrelivant unless you specify pin wieght and trailer weight. You can not hook up a 1500lb pin weight 5er and expect it to handle it. Their are many 800-900lb pin weight 5ers that are designed for 1/2 ton trucks. I don't have experience with a Tundra and 5th wheel so I might be a little out of line but specs matter.

Sorry if I sounded like an ass. That is not what I meant to do. I have been follwoing rv.net for a while and if you bring up the Tundra at all they will eat you up and spit you out. You know Chevy and Ford owners usually will not give any credit to Toyota. Kind of makes you defensive.

s.j.turner, i couldnt agree with you more.
i have a small (21 foot) fifth wheel that ive owned for 5 years. i pulled it with an old chevy silverado with no problems. now i hook it to my tundra and the rear wheels want to ride on the fenders. not to mention, the trailer has to ride funny in order to clear the bed walls. |
