Calling all towing gurus for your wise and sage advice:
While I am no stranger to towing (I pull a 28' Airstream, 27' Bertram, etc.), I am faaaaaaaaar from an expert when it comes to trailer construction and what I should be looking for. Every used trailer I see around here is completely thrashed and asking way too much, so it looks like my best bet is to find a reasonable priced new one.
So here is my deal, while I do not really "need" a flatbed, I tend to be a bad idea factory in the discretionary spending category and a trailer would help me bring home my wants. Additionally, I think I want to stop abusing my Tundra and instead trailer in a dedicated off road rig that will be street legal, but legal off road sites are always a long drive away.
Case in point, in the next month or so I have to pick up a vehicle that is 90"+W x 200"L. The month after that, maybe an M1102 trailer. After that, maybe that pink tricycle I have been eyeballing.
Towing nazis can rest assured that I plan to tow within the ~10,400 lbs limits of my Crewmax and have no intention of going back to a 3/4 or full ton. That said, ideally I would like to build out a fully Expo'd LC200 that will likely tip the scales at around 7K, so keeping weight down on the trailer is key.
The trailer will be mostly for vehicles, so I need ramps and imagine I will need a deckover design in order to load a 90" wide vehicle? From the other threads I have read on this site it seems getting the right axles and tires are paramount. @ColoradoTJ What exactly should I be looking for? What is an ideal length?
I do not want this to be a "starter" trailer, but would rather get it right the first time, which is why I am reaching out to you esteemed gentlemen.
Lastly, who can recommend a quality strap that is sufficient for a 7K vehicle? The Home Depot clown show strap collection I currently have will not cut it.
Thanks in advance.
