9.5mpg? That's not bad for towing. You'll be hard pressed to do better than that with any truck. No mods will improve that. Best thing is speed control. Drag is your enemy. Fuel burn increases significantly above 55mph.
Most any gas V8 is not going to do any better than 10 towing any significant weight. I get 9-10 with a TT at 5600. I've also been reading some RV forums, most everyone reports the same results.
I have a 2013 4.6 DC and I get around 12-13 MPG towing a trailer with 2 atvs, weight around 3000lbs.
That is however not really all that much weight, I no personal experience with heaver loads
Lighter, smaller trailer, stock tires, don't press down so far on the gas pedal. All things you don't want to do so just suck it up. It really isn't that much money.
