excess play in ball hitch area

Is it just me or is there alot of extra slop for the 2 in. receiver. I pulled a Uhaul today and the banging around didn't seem right. The opening measures an eighth in. more than the receiver. The pin also isn't very tight. I think I'm going to have to rubber coat the receiver hitch to eliminate the play and rattle! I don't remember my old hitchs being this bad! The truck, on the other hand, performed flawlessly with unbelievable power and handling.

Ya know I noticed that too the first time I put in the hitch for my boat. They must've oversized them slightly for some reason. Causes some "wiggle" room , doesn't it?

Are you using the Toyota spine or one you already had, I have a buddy who purchased his from a dealer and it fits a-lot tighter than mine.

I also noticed that the hitch is a little larger than every other hitch I have on my other other vehicles. My locking receiver pin was to short and I could not lock it. This same pin has been used on our F-350, Dodge 3500, 85 Toyota, and Jeep Rubicon with no problems.
I ground off about 1/16" off of each side of the pin to make it fit. Before that I went to the store and tried every locking pin they had and none were long enough.
I don't know why Toyota has a non standard hitch.

WELL! I should be happy the wiring plugs fit because they don't say Toyota. Damn, some of us guys have specialty hitchs costing hundreds of $$$$'s! It seems WEENIE to me! According to my co-workers, if I can afford the new truck I can afford a TOYOTA hitch My dealer better be able to get the right drop because I don't like scuuff'n tread off my tandem tires. I haven't filled my rating questionaire out yet(they want me to do it soon)

Some remedies are just to easy Thanx for the idea, never gave that a thought! I'm wrapping it up tomorrow. I really think it's the way they all fit now. I've been paying more attention and they're all sloppy. My old hitch was full of rust and dirt so it seemed tighter.

Another thought I had is the possibility of spraying the insert of the reciever with a coat or two bedliner spray which is available at most auto supply stores in an aerosol can to add a little thickness and protect it against rust.

Try Industrial Shrink Tubing, You can get it at Electrical Supply Stores, It Is Made For Barried Cable Splices But Is Large Enough To Fit The Spine, Just Heat, Shrink And Cut The Lock Pin Holes - Very Clean And Works Great!

I purchased a really nice reese hitch rated at 10,000lbs. i slipped it in and there is a bit of play. never had play like this in any other truck. maybe its to prevent it from rusting and freezing in??????

Drill and tap a hole on the underside of the hitch. Then put in a bolt in and it shouldent rattle. I do have to say I've only seen this.

noisy too

Ive noticed the noise and the play on my hitch as well. Granted i have a low cost Reese reciever, but still. Here is one fix that i found works well- attach 16' trailer, load 8000 lbs on said trailer. noise goes away!!

hey guys i'm pretty sure your new tundra has a class V reciever rather than the class III and IV that are found on most trucks. so that should give you an opening of 2 5/16 rather than the standard 2". i know gmc sell a nice shim for there trucks that should fit the toyota with no problem. so a quick stop by the gmc dealer should solve everyone problem....hope this helps!
