First issue that I resolved was I had a radiator cap fail. It actually fell apart the last time I took it off and part of the cap fell into the radiator. I thought, no big deal, it will just stay in the radiator. It is a small part so it should not be an issue.
Well...I still had some overheating going on at that point so I figured I would get a Scan Gauge and see where I actually was running. I would get up to 220ish sometimes a little more but never over 225. I then proceeded to replace the thermostat since I already ordered one with me thinking that is what the whole issue was to begin with. I replaced the thermostat earlier this week and ran the truck for around 30 miles and it cooled great. Stayed right around 188-192. I thought I finally fixed everything.
Now, I am still getting a little hot, up to 211-213 according to the Scan Gauge.
I am now thinking that little part of the radiator cap is stuck somewhere in the cooling system causing a slight restriction.
So my question is: Where would that little part of the cap be? Still in the radiator? Water pump area?
That little part of the cap is not causing any issues.
What year is your truck? How many miles? Outside temps when it is running warm. Does it run warm at idle, freeway driving, city driving? Ac on or off? After the truck has sat overnight is the coolant level in the radiator, not the overflow tank, full?
Truck is an 2007 with 138000 miles. Temps here in FL are 65ish in the AM and 90ish by the afternoon. It will run a little warm at idle, freeway driving, and city driving. It all stays close to the same temp, 200-213. I have tried it with the AC on and off. Radiator is full as well as overflow tank.
I did replace the water pump at around 95000 miles as well as the thermostat then too.
If it's getting hot while driving I would look at the water pump. If it's getting hot while idling than check your fan. I don't know if you have a choice on these tundra but on some vehicles you can choose a thermostat that opens at 195 or 210. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong
After reading some of the threads on here and the amount of miles you have on the pump I would say it's possible that it could be going out. I would think 212 is pretty normal operating temp.
If the truck always runs 200-213 ish and never gets any hotter no matter how you drive then I'm not so convinced that you actually have an issue. Where is the needle on the temp gauge when you are reading these temps on the scan gauge?
I decided that I was going to order almost everything that could be the issue. Radiator, new thermostat, upper and lower hoses, in hopes that one of these things would get my temps back to normal.
I started the word Wed. AM and found the main issue by mid morning, after taking out the radiator and upper hose. I looked down into the upper water inlet, and right in the way of the channel that would pass water to the water pump, there was the lost part of the radiator cap that originally failed. One thing to note, the water from the Toyota radiators flow from the bottom to the top, otherwise that part would have never been where it was.
I ordered an OSC radiator and would have put it in, but the tap for the overflow tobe broke in shipping so I didn't get to put that part in.
Now my temps stay very consistently at 195. I hope this helps someone else out at some point.
