The first of probably many questions. I just bought an '05 Double Cab at auction.
The brake fluid is very low. An empty brake fluid container in the corner by the booster indicates this has been an ongoing problem. However, I don't see a fluid leak anywhere. Nothing dripping underneath. Could it be leaking into the booster? Where else could it be going?
Possibly a cracked brake line or a leaky caliper. It might be worth pulling your wheels off and taking a close look at the bleeder screws, calipers/banjo bolt (holds the brake line to the caliper). It's got to be going somewhere, the search is on.
Yes it absolutely can be leaking into the booster, I've seen it happen before. You can unbolt the master and pull it away from the booster enough to take a peak inside. If it's full of fluid then the booster is garbage too. Perfect time to do the T-100 booster/MC mod.
Not necessarily a problem if it was never refilled as the brake pads wore out. As the brake pads wear fluid takes the place of the void because the piston is in a compressed location.
Toymdt nailed it, the booster is full of fluid.
Shopping for a master and booster. Any recommendations welcome on where to buy, or what I should look out for, OEM vs aftermarket.
Well unless you have deep pockets I would avoid the dealer. Most aftermarket boosters and masters will be fine. If you can find new master vs reman would definitely be the best.
I see no reason not to go with a used booster from a salvage yard if you're looking to save some money. Other then an issue like yours they're pretty bullet proof. I have a NAPA master on my truck and I'm happy with it. Just make sure you get a master with the reservoir, some have without but it just makes it that much easier.
Rockauto has them for about $150 + they are a site sponsor and there is usually a discount on their forum posts. I've ordered a ton of shit from them and always been pleased.
