I think they mean the whole bumper will fall off when you step on it. The recall will replace the resin brackets with steel brackets.

Well shit. I noticed they were plastic and was happy they wouldn't rust.

I ended up getting caught up in this recall today - I was supposed to take delivery of my new Tundra (2017 Limited Inferno CrewMax) today at 5 PM; the salesman called me at a little after 3 when the recall announcement came out to tell me they couldn't take my money until they did the recall

He had no idea yet when parts would be available however. He's supposed to give me a call tomorrow - hopefully the steel brackets are being shipped out to dealers ASAP for the fix!

Tell him you won't back into anything solid.

I tried... no dice! Something about federal law and regulations selling a recalled vehicle... its all about not wanting to get sued...

I've always thought the back bumper felt a little flimsy when I would step up into the bed, granted I'm definitely not a small guy. That being said I just thought it was because of the three section bumper instead of being a solid bumper like most trucks.

Here is a diagram of the 16' and 17' CM /DC rear bumper. Just trying to figure which part is the resin composite other than the step tread. My rear has Chrome end and all metal components below that tread. I guess I'll have to wait and see if I receive a letter from Toyota.

If I am reading the article correctly, I believe it is part 11. The reinforcement bracket. Apparently if you back into something it could weaken and then when stepped upon could break.

On my truck it is the under-frame that the end caps attach to. It is plastic.

I believe #9 by looking at that pic.

I am mistaken. It appears that 9 is the part. Found a picture of one and it is not metal.

since I have backed into something and my rear bumper is a little out of whack, I wonder if replacing the part will bring it back into alignment....

Imagine if Toyota offered a replacement option of going aftermarket.
