Curious on people's thoughts on this one. Driving back home today from upstate SC and almost home. I notice the battery light, abs light, trac control light and the emergency brake light is on. The speedometer goes nuts and then it stops registering speed. Shortly after I loose power and we had to stop on the shoulder of the road.
Does this sound like a battery or alternator issue? Still sitting on the side of the road, waiting on a tow truck.
I doubt it's the battery although I'm quite sure that the battery that is in there is dead now. Typically once the truck is running the alternator will charge enough to keep the vehicle running. Put a new battery in it, start the truck and then put a volt meter on the battery and see what you have for running voltage.
If it's dropping down to 12.2 volts while running than the alt isn't doing it's job. The voltage regulator is internal to the alternator so if it's bad, which it seems like it is, then it's time to replace the alternator.
Threw in a parts store alternator. If it dies anytime soon I'll get an OEM, but I needed the truck back on the road today. Have a constant voltage now.
Thanks for the help
