Fuel Tank Discrepancy

I dont consider myself an idiot, but I need a little help here.

I have a 08 Tundra. Sold my 04 Sequioa so I am used to the MPG computer.

On my Tundra, the gas light will come on, meaning low fuel. The on board will say 20 miles left or even 0 when the fuel gauge is reading at or below E.

Here is the crazy part. When I refuel at this juncture, I can only get it to take 21 to 22 gallons. The Tundra's ALL have 26 + gallon fuel tanks.

I have NOT yet put in more than 22.0 gallons on a refuel.
(For those wondering, the pump was not shut off due to amount of sale or anything for those who use fleet cards...LOL)

Now I can see both the fuel light AND the on board PC saying Im out of fuel and maybe a gallon or so actually left. But there is NO WAY I should say out of fuel and still have over 4 gallons left. But in order for my truck to have a 26 gal tank, the fuel light AND the pc would have to read empty while still containing 4 gallons of fuel.

I am 1500 miles on the Truck. The first time I refueled, the dealership tried some bullshit answer about the PC needs time to adjust to my driving, etc etc. But the fuel light?? As far as the PC being on, I manually figured out MPG and it pegged the onboard PC MPG dead on at 16.5.

Question #1- Has anyone else seen this?

Question #2- Could some dumb SOB put a Tacoma tank on my truck at the factory??

Thanks Guys!!

You don't have a Taco tank. Everyone is saying the same thing about their Tundra tanks. There are other threads on this site discussing this issue. It is a 26 gallon tank but the low fuel light and trip computer don't compute it correctly. It's like having 5 or 6 gallons of reserve. Don't sweat it as it is not a big issue.

It's normal. Try towing 10K pounds, getting 8 mpg, on deserted country highways and have that light come on. You'll be glad you have 4-5 gallons in reserve.

If you look under the truck, witch is easy for me, you can see the reserve separation in the tank. It looks to be about 5 or 6 gallons.

Someone reported their truck made a ding when there was 1 gallon left in the tank. I haven't gotten that low to try it out myself.

Get it close then try letting it run dry sitting in the driveway!

Well...I WAS going to throw like a 4 gal tank in the back of the truck, run it down till the gas man and onboard said I was empty, then actually calculate how many more miles I can go before she spits, bucks and shuts off.

Letting it run in the driveway with like 4 gallons in the reserve, would take awhile!

Not if you put a brick on the gas pedal.

Here in Hawaii we don't have the emission control pumps so topping off puts gas in the tank not back into the vapor collector.

Anyway, when the gas pump stops I can always put in an additional 3-4 gallons. Meaning (to me) that your missing gas is not in the reserve tank but that there is some flaw in the design.

I did it!!! I ran my truck completely out of gas, then added 1 gallon and drove 20 miles. I put 26.1 gallons of gas in my truck. I put 473 miles on 1 tank of fuel. After the light came on i drove about 100 miles. And i did not hear a "ding"! So the answer is yes, we do actually have a 26.4 gallon fuel tank.

That is awesome! Of course. Not sure why the hell that is. Kinda defeats the purpose of a gas man and an on board computer!!!!!

Don't mind the reserve. Especially when towing like it was mentioned before.. Just a safety feature... Laury I will try that...So far I haven't been able to get 3-4 gallons past the click off.
